The San Francisco 49ers signed offensive lineman Daniel Kilgore to a three-year extension on Thursday, giving themselves a safety net should center Jonathan Goodwin make good on his retirement talk or departs via free agency next month.
Kilgore was a fifth-round pick of the 49ers in 2011 out of Appalachian State. The 26-year-old played in just one game as a rookie in 2011, but saw action in all 38 games, including the postseason, for San Francisco over the last two years. He has never made a start.
Kilgore was a player the 49ers targeted on the last day of the draft in 2011, trading sixth- and seventh-round picks to the Green Bay Packers to get the pick they used to take the versatile Kilgore, who made starts at right guard and right tackle for Appalachian State and was used extensively at guard and as an extra blocker in short-yardage situations before getting reps at center in 2013.
