The San Jose Sharks (33-12-6, 72 points) defeated the Winnipeg Jets (23-24-5, 51 points) by the final score of 1-0 at the SAP Center in the second and final meeting of the season between them. Alex Stalock earned his second consecutive shutout by stopping all 20 shots thrown at him.
Also headlining tonight’s game once again for the San Jose Sharks was Joe Pavelski. His goal, which came in the third period, would be the only one scored this evening but it would be all the Sharks needed to secure the win because of Stalock’s great goaltending. His best saves came early in the game when the Jets threatened a few times but was able to turn all their chances aside.
As far as the goal goes Pavelski was the one who provided the initial pressure on Olli Jokinen who failed at clearing the puck out of the zone and instead turned the puck over to Justin Braun. The San Jose defenseman then fired a backhander on net and eventually Pavelski would bat the rebound out of midair and into the net. The goal gives Pavelski 28 on the season and means he is now alone for second in the league in goals scored.
After the goal the Jets tried to turn the offense up but the Sharks would have none of it. After a bit of an offensive lull though the Sharks came back alive and were able to keep the pressure on Winnipeg. The offense was especially strong in the waning moments of the third period when they were able to keep the Jets penned in their own zone for quite a while.
With a neutral zone faceoff and just 6.8 seconds left in the game the Jets called their timeout hoping to draw up one final play but to no avail as the defense of the San Jose Sharks would stand strong to keep Winnipeg from scoring.
Earlier in the game the Sharks thought they had scored with just under six minutes left in the second period after Pavelski fired a shot past Winnipeg goaltender Ondrej Pavelec. The goal was immediately disallowed though due to goaltender interference against Joe Thornton even though it looked like he was pushed into Pavelec by a Jets defenseman.
