Report: Phil Dawson Wants To Return To San Francisco 49ers in 2014; Jonathan Goodwin ‘Open’ To It

According to a report, San Francisco 49ers kicker Phil Dawson, who will be a free agent at the beginning of the new league year in March, “absolutely” wants to return to the 49ers for 2014.

According to Steve Corkran of the Contra Costa Times, via Twitter:

Center Jonathan Goodwin, who was reportedly leaning toward retirement, is also “open” to re-signing for another season in red and gold, according to Corkran.

Dawson, 38, had a career-high 140 points in his first season with the 49ers after spending the first 14 years of his career with the Cleveland Browns. Dawson was 32-for-36 on field goals and converted all 44 of his extra-point attempts this season.

A Pro Bowler with the Browns in 2012, Dawson is second on Cleveland’s all-time scoring list with 1,271 points and is the franchise’s career leader with 305 field goals. He was the last of the players from the expansion Browns in 1999—when the franchise returned to the league after a three-year absence—to leave Cleveland. He was signed by the Browns as a free agent in March 1999. He was originally signed by the Oakland Raiders as an undrafted free agent out of Texas in 1998, but was waived in training camp and was later signed to the practice squad of the New England Patriots that season, but never appeared on their regular roster.

Goodwin, 35, just completed his third year with the 49ers. He signed with San Francisco as a free agent in March 2011 after spending five years with the Saints, where he was a Pro Bowler and member of New Orleans’ Super Bowl champion squad in 2009. He was a fifth-round draft pick by the New York Jets out of Michigan in 2002 and played four years with the Jets, but did not become a regular until moving to center for the Saints in 2008.
