The Santa Clara City Council voted Tuesday to permit the San Francisco 49ers to use the Santa Clara Golf and Tennis Club for additional parking at new Levi’s Stadium, which will be the team’s new home beginning next season.

According to NBCBayArea.com, the 16 fairways of the golf course will allow for 5,000 additional parking places, boosting total parking at the new facility to 31,000 spots, considerably more than the available parking at Candlestick Park.

The permit will allow the golf course to be used for stadium events until the spring of 2016.

The 49ers will pay for improvements to the Santa Clara golf course, to include building driveways for the course, widening cart paths to serve as roads for cars and restoring grass on the fairways after cars drive off them. Tee boxes and greens would be roped off and flamed devices such as barbecues would be prohibited for fans who park on the golf course.

Part of the course is built over landfill and the possibility of underground gas emissions makes the use of flamed devices a potential fire hazard.

The first scheduled event is a Major League Soccer match between the San Jose Earthquakes and Seattle Sounders on Aug. 2.
