The UC Davis Aggies rallied in the second half to upset Air Force 80-74 on Saturday.
UCD (4-9) featured a balanced attack to turn back the visiting Falcons (6-5) at The Pavilion. Corey Hawkins led the Aggies with 20 points, and got help from Ryan Sypkens (17 points) off the bench, and Iggy Nujic (12 points). Reserve Clint Bozner and freshman guard Brynton Lemar both scored eight points apiece. Georgi Funtarov pulled down six rebounds, while Lemar dished out six assists to lead the Aggies.
Justin Hammonds and Tre’ Coggins both scored 20 points to lead Air Force, while Max Yon chipped in 13 points. Hammonds also led Air Force in rebounding with seven boards, followed by Marek Olesinski with six caroms. Coggins handed out seven assists to lead the Falcons.
The first half was a tight battle with Air Force holding a 38-34 leading into intermission. Led by Sypkens and Bozner, UCD’s bench outscored Air Force’s bench 32-6. Sypkens canned 4-of-9 three-point shots and a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line. However, it was the Aggies’ defense which forced 15 Air Force turnovers, and which UCD converted into 28 points. Avery Johnson led the Aggies’ defensive attack with three steals.
The Aggies also pounded the offensive boards for 16 second-chance points.
UCD shot 50.9 percent (27-53) from the field, 23.8 percent (5-21) behind the 3-point line, and 87.5 percent (21-24) from the free throw line.
Air Force shot 46.8 percent (29-62) from the field, 39.1 percent (9-23) behind the 3-point line, and 87.5 percent (7-8) from the free throw line. Air Force out-rebounded UCD 33 to 28.
