Jared Brownridge hit seven 3-pointers, a freshman record at Santa Clara, and the Broncos cruised to a 97-61 win over the La Sierra Golden Eagles Saturday night at the Leavey Center.
Santa Clara (4-5) led 39-24 at halftime before pulling away from the outmanned Golden Eagles (2-10) after intermission. La Sierra is an NAIA school from Riverside.
Brownridge led the Broncos with 24 points and was 7-for-14 from deep while also dishing out seven assists. Denzel Johnson added 14 points and six rebounds and Julian Clarke scored 13 points. Jerry Brown and Evan Roquemore also had six boards and Roquemore chipped in six assists, as well. Nate Kratch blocked two shots.
Daveon Woods led the Golden Eagles with 22 poiints and Wolfgang Wood had 10 points and five assists. Lance Jones pulled down eight rebounds for La Sierra, which was 19-for-50 (38 percent) overall, 6-for-17 (35.3 percent) from deep and 17-for-26 (65.4 percent) at the line.
Santa Clara was 31-for-64 (48.4 percent), 12-for-30 (40 percent) and 23-for-36 (63.9 percent) and won the rebounding battle 42-32.
The Broncos host Radford (6-2) on Monday night in the first of two games at the Leavey Center as part of the Las Vegas Classic. Santa Clara will host Sacred Heart on Wednesday before playing in the main portion of the event on Dec. 22 in Las Vegas against UNLV. They will play either South Florida or Mississippi State on Dec. 23.
