Brittany Boyd scored 15 points and the Cal Bears needed every one of their 23 offensive rebounds to hold off the feisty Idaho Vandals Saturday night, winning the championship of the Nugget Classic in Reno, Nev., with a 59-55 win.
The Bears, ranked No. 20 by the Associated Press, outrebounded the Vandals 56-35 on the night and that was the difference as the Golden Bears couldn’t throw a rock in water from a boat for as well as they shot the ball.
Cal (5-2) shot 27.5 percent (19-for-69) and had nothing going from long range, hitting just 10 percent (3-for-30) from 3-point range.
Idaho (4-3) was only marginally better. They shot 32.2 percent (19-for-59) from the floor and were 20 percent from deep (5-for-25).
The Golden Bears led by eight at the half, 30-22, and then had to hold on as the Vandals got as close as three points in the late going.
Boyd also had eight assists and eight rebounds. Reshanda Gray added 12 points, Courtney Range finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds and Mercedes Jefflo also pulled down 11 boards.
Stacey Barr led Idaho with 14 points and 11 rebounds and Connie Ballestero added 11 points. Alyssa Charlston had three steals.
Host Nevada beat Wake Forest in the consolation game, 95-87.
