The No. 20 Cal Golden Bears bounced back from an early deficit to roll past the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in the opening round of the Nugget Classic in Reno, Nev., Friday night 84-61.
The Golden Bears (4-2) advance to the championship game Saturday night against Idaho (4-2). The Vandals downed the host Nevada Wolf Pack 88-77 in the first game of the day.
Cal trailed by six early, but bounced back to take a 40-31 halftime lead. The Golden Bears put the game away with a 9-0 run to start the second half and led by as many as 24.
Justine Hartman came off the bench to score 16 points for the Golden Bears. Afure Jemerigbe had 15 points to go with six rebounds, Brittany Boyd tossed in 13 points and had six assists, Reshanda Gray had 12 points, Courtney Range chipped in 10 points and blocked three shots and Hind Ben Abdelkader also scored 10.
Dearica Hamby had a game-high 27 points and 10 rebounds for the Demon Deacons, who will play Nevada in the consolation game Saturday at 5:30 p.m. p.m. Chelsea Douglas scored 16 for Wake Forest.
Cal was 30-for-54 (55.6 percent) from the floor, compared to just 22-for-58 (37.9 percent) for the Demon Deacons.
