Former San Francisco 49ers never die it seems. They just become Kansas City Chiefs.
The Chiefs claimed wide receiver Kyle Williams off waivers Wednesday, one day after he was cut by the 49ers.
Williams’ addition could be as an insurance policy for Dwayne Bowe, who was arrested Sunday on charges of possession of a controlled substance and speeding. The Chiefs have said Bowe will play Sunday when the play the Denver Broncos, but Bowe could be facing league-mandated time away from the team (read, suspension) at some point.
Kansas City also has punt returner Dexter McCluster on the injury report with a sore ankle. Williams returned punts for the 49ers, but his effectiveness in the job might be a sore subject with some fans. His 20 fair catches lead the NFL this season.
Chad Hall was released by the Chiefs to make room for Williams. The 49ers don’t play Kansas City this year, but the Chiefs will be in the Bay Area Dec. 15 for their return engagement with the Oakland Raiders.
