San Francisco Giants, Oakland A’s Prospects Play In Arizona Fall League Fall Stars Game

Oakland Athletics infield prospect Addison Russell started at shortstop for the East Saturday night in the Arizona Fall League’s annual Fall Stars Game at Surprise Stadium in suburban Phoenix.

Russell was 0-for-2 in the game. He grounded out to second base in the third inning and was called out on strikes in the fifth before he was lifted in the bottom of the sixth.

San Francisco Giants prospect Kyle Crick was tagged with the loss in the East’s 6-1 defeat. He worked the third inning and allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits and a walk.

Giants catcher Andrew Susac was selected for the game but did not play.

Russell, 19, was the A’s first round pick in the 2012 Amateur Draft out of Pace (Fla.) High School. A 6-foot, 195-pound right-handed hitter, Russell hit .275/.377/.508 with 29 doubles, 10 triples and 17 homers for Class-A Stockton this season, scoring 85 runs and driving in 60 while stealing 21 bases in 24 attempts. He was 1-for-13 in three games for Triple-A Sacramento to close the season.

Playing for the Mesa Solar Sox in Arizona, Russell is hitting .245/.328/.396 in 13 games. He is 13-for-53 and has a homer and three RBI to go with four steals in six tries.

Crick, 20, was taken in the first round by the Giants in 2011 out of Sherman (Texas) High School. He missed two months this season with an oblique injury, but was 3-1 with a 1.57 ERA and 1.267 WHIP in 14 starts and 68.2 innings for Class-A San Jose this season. Crick struck out 95, an average of 12.5 Ks per nine innings. Pitching for the Scottsdale Scorpions in the AFL, Krick is 0-1 with a 4.66 ERA and 1.759 WHIP in five appearances, three starts, and 9.2 innings. He’s struck out 14, but has been a bit wild with nine walks.

Susac, 23, was a second round pick of the Giants in 2011 out of Oregon State. He hit .256/.362/.458 in 310 plate appearances for Double-A Richmond this season, with 12 homers and 46 RBI. He is 11-for-31 for Scottdale in 11 games, with a homer and four RBI.

The Arizona Fall League will continue through Nov. 14, with a championship game to be played on Nov. 16.
