The two Bay Area women’s college basketball powers will both open the 2013-14 season in the top 10 of the Associated Press poll.
Stanford, which went 33-3 last year before bowing out in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament, is ranked third in the Associated Press’ preseason poll, which was released Friday. The Cardinal was also third in the USA Today Coaches Poll, which was released earlier this week.
Cal reached its first-ever Final Four last season and set a school record with its 32-4 mark. The Golden Bears are ninth in both polls.
Connecticut, the defending national champion, enters the season atop both polls and Stanford and Cal will each get a shot at the Huskies during the regular season.
Stanford visits UConn Nov. 11 while the Golden Bears and Huskies play in New York on Dec. 22.
Stanford’s non-conference schedule also includes hosting No. 2 Duke on Nov. 10 and No. 4 Tennessee on Dec. 21.
As for their own battles, the Cardinal and Golden Bears will play twice in three days—at Maples Pavilion Jan. 30 and at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley on Feb. 2.
