It looks like the injury bug, which has plagued the San Francisco 49ers early and often this season, has struck again.
During the 49ers’ daily press conference Jim Harbaugh announced that rookie wide receiver Quinton Patton has a fractured foot and will “miss some time.”
Harbaugh had also called it an injury to Patton’s “metacarpal,” but presumably he meant the metatarsal because that is located in his foot. The metacarpal is located the hand. He also said Patton would remain on the team’s 53-man roster.
With the receiving corps as thin as it is already, this injury just makes it more apparent that the running game we saw Thursday night needs to keep rolling.
Also, once again an injury will open the door for someone else to step up, and this time it may be Jon Baldwin’s spot to lose.
Patton started out as the number two receiver to start the game, but once he left in the first half Kyle Williams took that roll. However, with Williams struggling once again, perhaps Baldwin gets the chance to show why he was drafted in the first round by the Kansas City Chiefs.
Patton, who was drafted in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft out of Louisiana Tech, impressed everyone during the final two games of the preseason racking up six catches for 87 yards and two touchdowns.
Unfortunately for the 49ers, those numbers have not translated to regular season success thus far, and he only has one catch in the first four games of his NFL career.
