The San Francisco 49ers look to rebound from two tough losses in a row as they take on the St. Louis Rams on the road on Thursday Night Football.

The 49ers are coming off of a disappointing 27-7 loss to the Colts, where Andrew Luck clearly got the better of Jim Harbaugh’s squad. This comes just a week after a 29-3 beatdown at the hands of the Seahawks.

This is a 49ers team that has more questions than answers right now, and they will face another tough challenge in St. Louis. The 49ers were held winless in two matchups against the Rams last season, with one game ending in a tie and the other being 16-13 overtime loss.

For those who don’t know, both Patrick Willis and Nnamdi Asomugha are inactive for today’s game for the 49ers. Vernon Davis on the other hand IS active. Also Jon Baldwin is active for tonight’s game, so we’ll see how he does tonight.

Expect Wilhoite to fill in for Willis, Tremaine Brock to play nickel corner, and A Dan Skuta gets the start in place of Aldon Smith. Cory Lemonier will also figure in as the OLB in passing downs.

  • Robert Carter

Does this come down to who controls the trenches?

  • Maggie Pilloton

“When you’re 1-2, you really don’t want to go 1-3.” What great commentary to start this game…

  • Robert Carter

Run defense already looking improved… stretching out those zone runs

  • Robert Carter

Good start, now points on this drive will go a long way to instilling some confidence. Just show the ability to move the ball and pick up any points

  • Robert Carter

That looks like the old Niners… Downhill power running and playaction

  • Aaron Candelaria

That’s the run game we’re used to seeing!

  • Aaron Candelaria

Oh boy, blown coverage and the 49ers escape with just a field goal….barely.

    • Robert Carter

Still can’t tell who blew that coverage… no one was even close

  • Maggie Pilloton

    49ers got lucky there…phew

  • Maggie Pilloton

Quinton Patton makes a cameo appearance!

  • Maggie Pilloton

Some strange third down play calls so far…

  • Samuel Charles

    if i may..

you don’t call that bubble screen on 3rd and 7 if you have confidence in your qb..

    do you?

    • Aaron Candelaria

From the looks of it, Kaep killed the original play, probably because he saw the Rams call blitz, and that WR screen was actually a pretty good decision against the coverage.

      • Samuel Charles

        deer + headlights = 2013 kaep

        =-0

  • Robert Carter

And… the Niners are already abandoning the run

  • Samuel Charles

    Real (non hating) 49er question.

I was thinking about doing the 49er roundtable again this week after four games.

did you guys enjoy it? want to participate again? input welcome..

let me know if you are interested por favor…

    sam

    • Robert Carter

I enjoyed it… Count me in

    • Maggie Pilloton

      I’d do it again!

    • Aaron Candelaria

      Me three!

  • Robert Carter

Boobie Dixon with another near big play on special teams

  • Aaron Candelaria

9ers defense has been great all game on defense… except for on third down.

  • Maggie Pilloton

Donte has to make that catch!!!!!!! Ugh

  • Robert Carter

Foot injury for Patton. His return is questionable

    • Samuel Charles

Return of the 2011-12 49er dominance looks questionable

      • Aaron Candelaria

        Lol man you are relentless

  • Robert Carter

Keep feeding that man the rock!

  • Maggie Pilloton

Frank Gore just ran for 27 yards…give him the ball again, not LaMichael!

    • Samuel Charles

i agree… weren’t the 49ers at their best the last two seasons when they lined up and ran it down your throat and then killed you with vernon davis on play action?

not some horizontal oregon duck run

i feel like they’ve tailored so much of their offense to kaep they’ve lost some of their identity..

      huh??

      • Robert Carter

I agree.. Kap should be an addition to what you were doing successful, as just another weapon

  • Robert Carter

    Heeeee’s Baaaacck

  • Aaron Candelaria

    it’s a bird, it’s a plane, nope, it’s Anquan Boldin!

  • Maggie Pilloton

I forgot what a passing touchdown looked like.

    • Robert Carter

I would really like to see a couple of rushing touchdowns… preferably from Frank

      • Maggie Pilloton

Me too. I’m fine with a Boldin TD for now though haha

        • Robert Carter

And that is my totally unbiased opinion… because I totally do not have Gore on my fantasy team… haha

        • Aaron Candelaria

Yea at this point can’t be too picky with the touchdowns.

  • Maggie Pilloton

The Niners haven’t had a lead in a game since Week 1.

  • Aaron Candelaria

Tarell Brown is getting picked on, third time i’ve seen him get beat tonight.

  • Robert Carter

Richardson makes Kevan Barlow look like a downhill runner

  • Aaron Candelaria

To quote Nessler. ” Bing bang boom, interception.” Lol

  • Samuel Charles

    3rd & 1…

yes let’s get in the shotgun..

this 21st century football confuses me…

    where’s the wing option??

    • Robert Carter

I like being dynamic on offense (love oregon), but sometimes you just have go hat on hat and see who is tougher

  • Samuel Charles

    two touchdowns against terrible defense

    • Samuel Charles

      3rd & 19 — 4th & inches with 40 secs left..

two situations you Never allow a big play..

  • Aaron Candelaria

Gore already over 100 yards rushing, and we are still in the first half.

  • Robert Carter

10.7 yards per carry for Gore. I am thinking they should lean on him to ice this one in the second half

  • Aaron Candelaria

49ers going for the free kick! Love to see this.

  • Samuel Charles

good coaching by harbaugh, i’m surprised more teams don’t do this

    • Robert Carter

That is what Aaron was saying… especially a team like the Raiders with Jano’s cannon

  • Samuel Charles

gore, 49ers rushing defense, and the rams being a bad team is what stands out to me..

no 49er besides boldin has more than 1 catch, or more than 11 yards…

  • Samuel Charles

rich eisen just called him Al Gore =)

  • Robert Carter

Quick update on the Aldon Smith Sack Tracker: 4.5 (credited with a full sack that was originally credited to Justin last week vs the Colts)

  • Aaron Candelaria

Wow what a huge stop by the 49ers defense after starting in their own territory.

    • Samuel Charles

when is the terrelle pryor autobiography airing?

      • Samuel Charles

        sweet ad though

      • Robert Carter

The Rams are a better team than the Jaguars… just sayin’

  • Aaron Candelaria

    Baldwin sighting!

  • Robert Carter

    Vernon Davis Sighting

    • Aaron Candelaria

And all because the 9ers ran the football.

  • Maggie Pilloton

This 49ers team is looking more and more like the real 49ers.

  • Maggie Pilloton

This game would’ve looked very different if Vernon Davis wasn’t playing.

    • Robert Carter

I don’t know if it would have been much different… the major difference is finding success in the run game and sticking to it. I think he is helping to open up Boldin in the pass game

      • Maggie Pilloton

That’s what I meant that his presence helps Boldin get open.

        • Robert Carter

Make sense… I just wish the other receivers would help out a little more, but Patton getting hurt is limiting that

          • Maggie Pilloton

Definitely. Kyle Williams is pretty useless.

          • Robert Carter

I had high hopes for him, but he just can’t get open underneath.

  • Aaron Candelaria

Lemonier all over the place, looking good this evening.

    • Samuel Charles

isn’t Lemonier an after dinner liqueur?

      • Robert Carter

        Well played sir

    • Robert Carter

Love Lemonier’s potential! The thought of him and Aldon as passing situation ends has me excited

  • Samuel Charles

    robert,

i’m really starting to think the Jaguars wish the Rams were on their schedule

    • Robert Carter

The Niners do get the Jags … in London, England. So, the travel might limit the beat down they put on the Jags

    • Samuel Charles

i mean the jags wish they could play the rams… (i’m sure all of london will bow to kaepernick)

and i do think maggie’s right about vernon, he not only gets boldin open..

he makes the strong safety have to sit deeper on run support

      • Aaron Candelaria

Don’t forget Vernon is a great run blocker too, so he’s no doubt has an impact there as well.

        • Samuel Charles

          hell,

let’s not forget about vernon’s play calling, and how he sells peanuts too !!!

          his impact is immeasurable

          =)

  • Maggie Pilloton

    Bowman’s having a field day

  • Robert Carter

Bowman and Willis are easily the best linebacking duo in the NFL. They are like mirror images of each other

  • Samuel Charles

and somewhere in america someone is compiling a Top 10 list of the most boring Thursday night games in NFL history — inspired by tonight’s game.

    • Maggie Pilloton

#2: Next week’s Browns vs. Bills game

      • Samuel Charles

#1 the raiders in any games terrelle pryor isn’t playing

wait, the raiders would never get a thursday night game

    • Robert Carter

When was the last compelling Thursday night game?

      • Samuel Charles

in all seriousness, it’s just lame that they started scheduling these thursday games in the first half of the season..

they just mess up my whole football biorhythm

        • Robert Carter

Yea… personally they should do a a prime time Saturday night game, but that would take away from the NCAA. I also would not be opposed to two Monday night games instead of a Thursday night game.

      • Samuel Charles

just looked, week 1 was Patriots 13, Jets 10

tom brady threw for 185 yards

depends on your definition of compelling..

but it sounds better than this debacle

        • Robert Carter

I watched a little of that game… got so bored that I decided to read the dictionary instead

          • Samuel Charles

            c’mon carter!

          • Aaron Candelaria

Don’t lie, we know you don’t know how to read.

          • Samuel Charles

he was listening to an audiobook of the dictionary on his phone

          • Robert Carter

I have to learn those fancy words from somewhere

          • Samuel Charles

if you used the time during replays in this game you could of already read all of War and Peace…

which brings us back to aaron’s point about your literacy

  • Robert Carter

One thing, we haven’t really touched on… But Jon Baldwin with two catches in traffic. His size makes him an intriguing target and the only big questions marks were his route running and hands

    • Samuel Charles

as much i hate kaepernick, and like to point out that most first-time qb’s don’t start on teams that were in the NFC title game the year before, so his success should also be seen as a function of the dominant niner defense and runing game..

but — there are so many moving parts at receiver in 2013…

baldwin’s new, then manningham is coming back, davis was out, then crabtree will come back later, his favorite receiver boldin is new, kyle williams, patton, rookie TE, lamichael will be part of the passing game has missed time….

that’s just a ton of moving parts that will be changing all season..

i don’t think his receivers 1-5 options will be the same for three straight games all year..

even if they get healthy at year end?

i still hate kaepernick, but there are reasons he should take a step back this year

      • Robert Carter

definitely… his supporting cast is much weaker this year on the outside, but he is going to grow with his quarterback skills throughout the season. So, the step back shouldn’t be too severe.

        • Samuel Charles

all the more reason to be stubborn about establishing gore – i think

          • Robert Carter

Totally agree… It will help to get these receivers open with the play action

  • Robert Carter

So is it too early to say that Eric Reid is having a pretty solid start to his rookie season?

    • Samuel Charles

      he’s a stud, i only questioned his 40 time..

great find, he’ll be good player for a long time..

      • Robert Carter

He brings the tackling skills they lost with Goldson, maybe not as explosive through the tackle, but he brings a lot more in respect to coverage

        • Samuel Charles

          agreed,

i’ve been really impressed by his ball skills in the air.. i sometimes feel like that’s something DB’s either have or they don’t..

Reid definitely has good awareness, he’s relaxed and confident about what he’s doing once the ball goes in the air..

          • Robert Carter

I love the way he closes on tackles and he doesn’t go for head shots

  • Aaron Candelaria

49ers just need to run this out to end it. No missed triple-option pitches please.

    • Samuel Charles

      yeah, c’mon

i got a print deadline here in Poughkeepsie i’m trying to meet!!

  • Samuel Charles

i believe Kaepernick is leading the nfl in fumbles lost since he began starting..

  • Robert Carter

That was a pretty weak call on Donte… Where are you suppose to hit a guy? Are you suppose to let him catch and not trying and knock it loose?

    • Aaron Candelaria

      Welcome to the new NFL.

  • Samuel Charles

    stat:

last year the 49ers only allowed 27 points or more twice in the regular season..

this is the first game of the 2013 season where the 49ers have allowed less than 27 points..

    • Robert Carter

Helps when the offense can maintain possession to keep them fresh

  • Aaron Candelaria

Oh no Staley sounds BADLY injured.. that does NOT sound good….

    • Samuel Charles

      sound being the operative word

      • Aaron Candelaria

Relieved to see him walking off… let’s hope it’s not serious.

  • Aaron Candelaria

Speaking of bad Thursday night football games, who is excited to watch the Bills vs the Browns in a week?!

  • Robert Carter

With that the Niners get back on track with a thorough dismantling of the lowly Rams… Easily handling teams they should beat. great games by Gore, who looked like he was 25 not 30. Solid game by Kap, who seemed to get settled in after some early troubles. Defense was awesome again and Bowman was spectacular. Have to hope that Staley just tweaked something and it is not a serious injury.

    • Samuel Charles

gimme a second, i’ll find reason for pessimism..

      =)

      • Robert Carter

I think the state of of Staley’s knee is reason enough to have some doubts… if he is gone for an extended period that will hurt big time. Almost, like the Raiders with Veldheer

  • Aaron Candelaria

Defense looked great, but the fact that Bradford was 19-41 is pretty awful. Would not be surprised to see STL looking for a qb in the draft this season if things continue this way.

    • Samuel Charles

NFC West still looks like a two team division to me..

cards aren’t good, rams are terrible.. bradford needs replacing, cards have Carson the turnover…

niners just have to continue to win and put pressure on the Seahawks..
