Oracle Team USA has won the 34th America’s Cup defeated Emirates Team New Zealand 9-8 in what was one of the greatest comebacks international sports has ever seen.
At one point down 8-1 in this best of 17 series, Team USA came all the way back to defend the America’s Cup. Not only that, but the American team had to win two extra races because they were docked two points after after an independent jury rules Oracle Team USA had illegally altered their yachts for the preliminary events last year.
Having won 11 total races over the past few weeks is an incredible feat in itself, and even greater considering they won eight in a row, with their backs against the wall through each of those.
The 19th and final race featured a neck-and-neck start from both Team USA and the Kiwis. The US boat then lost some ground after they took a bit of a nosedive, but quickly recovered and trailed for a bit.
However, once the race hit Mark 2 and the teams split, it was Oracle Team USA in the faster boat who took over. Team Emirates New Zealand had the lead briefly coming out of the first tack, but after that it was all USA. They clearly had the fastest boat and it showed throughout the race. From then on, Team USA kept stretching their lead and left the Kiwis in the dust.
After the race, Team Oracle owner and multi-billionaire Larry Ellison joined his cup-winning crew for the celebrations. After years of his dream coming to fruition, from the designing of the boats, to the location, and everything else involved, this has to be a great victory for him as well as his crew.
