Bay Area Buzz 9/18: A's Walk Off, Raiders 29th in Power Rankings, 49ers a Nightmare for Colts

A’s Get Closer to Clinching Division

The A’s took another step closer to the American League West title Tuesday when Josh Donaldson delivered a two-out bases-loaded single off the Los Angeles Angels’ Michael Kohn, good for a 2-1 victory.

Oakland will win the division with any combination of six A’s wins and Texas Rangers losses.

Raiders 29th in Power Rankings

So not even handling their business at home against woeful Jacksonville was enough to give the Raiders a bigger bump.

But that’s what happens when you score a touchdown on your opening drive and then have to settle for five field goal attempts, missing one, against the Jaguars. And when you lose your highest-paid player in $9.5 million strong safety Tyvon Branch to a broken leg for an indefinite amount of time. And the timing couldn’t be worse, a week before traveling to No. 2-ranked Denver for “Monday Night Football.”

Niners a Nightmare for Colts

If you were trying to create an NFL team with the expressed purpose of defeating the Indianapolis Colts, that team would look a lot like the San Francisco 49ers.

San Francisco has a bruising pass rush led by defensive lineman Justin Smith and outside linebacker Aldon Smith, and the Colts have a rookie making his first start at left guard Sunday on the offensive line.

An Indianapolis defensive secondary that has had communication problems in each of the first two games faces a powerful and crafty veteran receiver in Anquan Boldin, who burned the Colts for five catches for 145 yards and one touchdown in the playoffs last season as a Baltimore Raven.
