Manchester United cruised to a 4-2 victory on Match Day 1 of the UEFA Champions League against Bayer Leverkusen at Old Trafford. United, under new manager David Moyes, came out firing to a very boisterous home crowd. The Champions League has eluded United far too often for fans’ liking, but Moyes hopes to deliver with his first crack at it.
Rooney was particularly in rampant form, as he notched two goals in a milestone night in which he broke the British goalscoring record in the competition, while simultaneously joining the rarified club of 200 goals in a United shirt.
Rooney opened the scoring midway through the first half after a Patrice Evra cross found him, the diminutive striker crashed the top on the net with his goal. The Red Devils were stunned in the 54th minute when Simon Rolphes equalized for the Germans, but it didn’t take long for an audacious Robin Van Persie goal in the 59th minute to restore United’s lead. In the ensuing 20 minutes, United sealed the game after a Rooney and an Antonio Valencia goal. A late consolation goal by Omer Toprak was not enough to dampen Moyes’ first Champions League win.
Next up for Red Devils is the hated cross town rivals Manchester City at the Eastlands on Sunday, but until then United fans will delight in this dominating performance at the Theatre of Dreams.
