San Francisco 49ers vs. Green Bay Packers: Live Game Thread

Welcome to Golden Gate Sports’ live game thread as we kick off the NFL season in the Bay Area with the San Francisco 49ers welcoming in the Green Bay Packers in a Week 1 matchup.

These teams met each other last season in the first game, in which the 49ers earned a 30-22 victory at Lambeau Field. They also faced off in the NFC Divisional Round of the postseason when Colin Kaepernick broke the record for rushing yards by a quarterback in an NFL playoff game with 181 yards on the ground. Kaepernick made the Packers look straight-up foolish as the 49ers eliminated the Packers from the playoffs.

However, Clay Matthew and Packers defense have vowed that they will be ready this time around. The 49ers will have their hands full with Aaron Rodgers under center for Green Bay, and we will see if their top-notch defense is up to the task.

Here’s all the info you need to know about the game:

  • NFL Season 2013

The NFL 2013 live streaming and TV schedule features a full slate of games on Sunday, Sept. 8 including a visit by the Atlanta Falcons to New Orleans. The Falcons vs. Saints game will take place at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in Louisiana, with this season opener featured on different TV and 2013 NFL live stream sources for viewers to enjoy.

A Sept. 8 report via ESPN discusses how one man will be in the spotlight during Sunday’s Falcons vs. Saints game, and it won’t be one of the players. While the Saints finished their season second in the NFC South, their disappointing record of 7-9 also matched that of the Buccaneers and Panthers. However, the fact that head coach Sean Payton was not on the sidelines due to suspension, weighed heavily on their lack of overall direction. On Sunday, Payton is back on the sidelines to coach the Saints, leading to already high expectations and hype behind New Orleans. Payton, who sat out the entire 2012 season due to involvement in the Saints’ bounty scandal, said of today’s first game back, and the “hooplah” surrounding it all: “We play in a lot of games with a lot of hoopla around it, whether it’s Sunday nights, Monday nights, or postseason games, it’s still about protecting the football. It’s still about blocking and tackling. It’s about all the things that we have control over, but those other things, we will try to eliminate as best as we can.” Overall, the Saints have established a 10-2 record when QB Drew Brees and coach Sean Payton are both part of the game for the team. However, last year the Falcons were on the brink of making it to the Superbowl, falling short by a slim margin as they lost to the San Francisco 49ers 28-24 in the NFC Championship game. The team went 13-3 on the season, and is certainly looking to repeat, if not build more upon last season’s success. Back in late August, three out of four NFL.com analysts chose the Falcons to finish at the top of the NFC South. The one dissenter, Gregg Rosenthal, has the Saints at the top. For today’s matchup, the focus will be heavily placed upon a coach, but don’t forget about the stars on the field. Two of the better quarterbacks in the NFL will be featured, with Matt Ryan for the Falcons and Drew Brees for the Saints. Ryan threw for 4,719 yards with 32 touchdowns and 14 INT’s in his 2012 season, while Brees racked up 5,177 yards, 43 touchdowns and had 19 INT’s. Brees finished first overall in yards, with Ryan fifth. The two tied for third place in terms of completions with 422, trailing only Matt Stafford and Tony Romo. Both were top ten in terms of QB ratings, making this what could be a stellar matchup of passers. Several injuries linger for both teams heading into the game. For Atlanta, center Joe Hawley and punt kicker Matt Bryant are both probable. Asante Samuel is questionable with a thigh injury, while LB Stephen Nichols (thigh) and WR Roddy White (ankle) are also questionable. For New Orleans, LB Martez Wilson (elbow), LB Junior Galette (hamstring), WR Marques Colston (foot) and WR Nick Toon (chest) are all probably as of Sept. 6 heading into the game today. Today’s Falcons vs. Saints game has a start time of 1 p.m. EST. Television coverage is scheduled for FOX on cable or satellite service providers around the country. For live online coverage, fans with NFL Sunday Ticket through DirecTV in the U.S. can watch the game on various devices including select smartphones and tablets, as well as video game consoles and TV’s. There’s also replays with NFL Game Rewind service. Live audio coverage will be available on Sirius XM channel 86. • Aaron Candelaria

Run defense is stout as usual early.

  • Aaron Candelaria

Welcome to the 49ers Boldin! Big 3rd down conversion early to get the sticks moving.

  • Robert Carter

Get use to Kap to Bolding on third downs this season.

  • Robert Carter

Kap looking efficient already… just has to get into the flow of the game

  • Aaron Candelaria

    Touchdown Vernon! Love it!

  • Robert Carter

I was a little surprised that throw didn’t take Boldin into the first row of stands… it was a rocket

  • Maggie Pilloton

    TOUCHDOWN!!!!!

  • Robert Carter

Perfect throw to put it just where Vernon can get it

  • Cameron Bothwell

Niners need to stop the pass because Packers know they cant run it

  • Aaron Candelaria

And there’s that Packers offense, moving the ball quickly and efficiently.

  • Aaron Candelaria

Well back on offense to answer that quick strike by the Packers.

  • mysha612
  • Robert Carter

There is Cox making some noise in the return game

  • Robert Carter

Boldin is going to be huge this year.

    • Aaron Candelaria

And a second time on 3rd down again.

  • Robert Carter

That Kap to Williams deep ball could be important as the year moves on. Williams seems like he can always get by a DB

    • Aaron Candelaria

9ers have been in need of that deepthreat WR, and Jenkins clearly wasn’t it.

  • Cameron Bothwell

    Niners continue to waste timeouts

  • Aaron Candelaria

The only way to stop Justin Smith is to grab him by the facemask.

  • Robert Carter

Looks like a fumble… Huge turn of events

  • Aaron Candelaria

Gotta love the 49ers going for the kill with a play fake on first down. Still get 8 yards out of it.

  • Aaron Candelaria

Things getting nasty now a the 49ers standing up for their QB after a late hit from Clay Matthews.

  • Robert Carter

    Cheap shot by Matthews

  • Cameron Bothwell

    Matthews and Stailey are gone

  • Cameron Bothwell

    Wow! No ejections?

  • Aaron Candelaria

Where was the penalty to Staley on that?! I don’t mind him getting that penalty though.

  • Maggie Pilloton

    Dirty play by Matthews.

  • Maggie Pilloton

TD for Boldin!!! Take that, Clay Matthews!

  • Robert Carter

Is that what they call “poetic justice”?

  • Robert Carter

Could Boldin be the answer to the Niners’ red zone woes?

  • Aaron Candelaria

    Nice work Nnamdi!

  • Robert Carter

The Niners’ defense is playing very well so far. It really helps that the Packers make themselves one dimensional

  • Cameron Bothwell

Kaep needs to watch the clock, they’ve wasted 2 timeouts and a delay of game already

  • Aaron Candelaria

Kaep had some happy feet on that third and long but great contain by the Green Bay defense.

    • Robert Carter

      Kap*

      • Aaron Candelaria

Haha that’s right, I forgot he cleared that up on twitter.

  • Cameron Bothwell

Green Bay is digging their own grave with these penalties

  • Maggie Pilloton

Rushing yards for the Packers: 7 Rushing yards for the Niners: 18

  • Aaron Candelaria

Aw man! Reid’s pick-six stopped by Rodgers at the 3!

  • Aaron Candelaria

Well the return yards come back, but still a huge play by the rookie.

  • Maggie Pilloton

I could watch Kap throw to Boldin all day long. So pretty.

  • Robert Carter

Niners need to get the run game going.

  • Aaron Candelaria

Than one hurts. Dawson is usually money from inside 50. Flashbacks to Akers…

  • Robert Carter

I don’t think Dawson is use to the wind at Candlestick

  • Robert Carter

That was a weak roughing call as well… the Refs are having a rough day

  • Aaron Candelaria

Sitton is having trouble with Justin Smith. I think thats 3 holding calls he’s drawn now.

  • Aaron Candelaria

49ers definitely not tackling as well as they should be, and it killed them on this drive.

  • Maggie Pilloton

    Perrish Cox…smh…

  • Cameron Bothwell

Keys for each team to win
    Packers: cut down the penalties
    Niners: Make tackles

    • Aaron Candelaria

Also I think the 9ers need to establish the running game, which has been non-existent.

      • Maggie Pilloton

Only 16 rushing yards that half! Crazy!

        • Aaron Candelaria

Yea, definitely not we’re used to!

  • Aaron Candelaria

I’d say the Packers will be happy to leave this half with a tie, 49ers should not be. Sets us up for a great second half.

  • Cameron Bothwell

That wrong call on the Kap late hit saved the Niners

  • Cameron Bothwell

    Boldin can not be stopped

  • Aaron Candelaria

Boldin is showing us everything, and he is just an absolute monster. How the Ravens let him go for a 5th round pick is beyond me.

    • Robert Carter

      Sixth round pick

  • Aaron Candelaria

Mamma there goes that man again!!

  • Robert Carter

Ozzie Newsome has to be kicking himself right now

  • Maggie Pilloton

    Thanks, Ravens.

  • Maggie Pilloton

    Boldin: 10 catches, 143 yards.

  • Maggie Pilloton

Eric Reid has been impressive. Nice first game for the rook.

  • SportsFan123

Clay Matthews is dirty…thats all I have to say. – Cole Kundich

    • Samuel Charles

i wish he was on the raiders

    • Cameron Bothwell

May be dirty but he would be a huge assett to any team. Very good player, hard not to like him

      • SportsFan123

I’ll take Aldon Smith and Ahmad Brooks over him any day of the week. He is too weak to beat Kaepernick cleanly.

  • Robert Carter

A few missed tackles early in the game, but Reid has looked solid since then. Looking like a great move by the Niners to trade so far.

  • Aaron Candelaria

Aaron Rodgers comes back and answers again. Packers aren’t going away quietly. 49ers might need to dial up some blitzes because the pass rush is not getting in at all.

  • Cameron Bothwell

The Niners have become a huge threat on the ground and in the air

  • Maggie Pilloton

First 300-yard passing game for Kap.

  • Robert Carter

He has looked sharp all day. He putting the ball in spots only his guys can get to. Also, it helps having Boldin catching everything near him.

  • Samuel Charles

conservative play call with Aaron Rodgers on the other sideline??

    • Aaron Candelaria

I’m sure the Packers dropped everyone into deep coverage and were going to give up anything underneath.

  • Robert Carter

    Aldon Smith Sack Counter: 2

    • Samuel Charles

what’s his counter when playing without his twin brother Justin???

      • Robert Carter

Well he was working with a torn labrum before Justin went down

        • Samuel Charles

          Aldon was??

  • Aaron Candelaria

Great 3-and-out by the defense. Fangio mixing it up with Bowman coming across the formation and Aldon Smith dropping into coverage on that 3rd down.

    • Samuel Charles

you’ve done something right when you make Rodgers choose the wrong read

  • Samuel Charles

    rams/cardinals now tied…

winner will be alone in first in the NFC West after Week 1 (with tiebreakers)

  • Aaron Candelaria

Kap and Kyle Williams soooo close to hitting the big play. Matthews disrupted that one by hitting Kap. Man I hate that guy….

    • Samuel Charles

god i wish the raiders had a defender that inspired that kind of hate..

      • Aaron Candelaria

        Keep dreaming Samuel, keep dreaming.

        • Samuel Charles

          cellar dwellers with big dreams?

          • Robert Carter

Who knows… you could have your own shiny new Clowney soon

  • Samuel Charles

the 49ers have 40 yards rushing right now…

    • Samuel Charles

but the packers have about exactly the same…

      all on the QB’s shoulders

  • Aaron Candelaria

This is a big drive coming up for Kap and Co.

  • Aaron Candelaria

    Q!!

  • Aaron Candelaria

Frank the Tank! Great answer by the 49ers. Best drive of the afternoon by the offense.

  • Robert Carter

This team could be impossible to stop if they can get the running game going with Kap throwing the ball the way he is.

  • Aaron Candelaria

Eric Reid comes flying in from the secondary to stop Rodgers. Guy is a monster. Followed by a great stop on third and the 9ers get a clutch 3-and-out.

  • Maggie Pilloton

Who’s more frightening: Eric Reid or Dashon Goldson?

    • Aaron Candelaria

I’d still say Goldson, but Reid is leagues ahead of Goldson in coverage already.

  • Maggie Pilloton

This 49ers team is going to be at a whole other level of elite when Crabtree comes back.

  • Robert Carter

Eric Reid.. He looks so much faster than Goldson. On his tackle on Rodgers he looked like he was shot out of a cannon

  • Aaron Candelaria

Going for it on 4th, love the aggressiveness.

  • Samuel Charles

Kaepernick’s been taking notes from Jared Goff….

I hate burning that last timeout right there????

    • Robert Carter

It was not really burned. They were trying to coax Green Bay offside.

      • Samuel Charles

        they should’ve send an email…

        it would’ve worked better

  • Robert Carter

    Boldin = Clutch

  • Maggie Pilloton

Kap now has 412 yards, and Boldin has 208 yards. Wow.

    • Samuel Charles

Madden numbers on the final opening day on San Francisco

  • Aaron Candelaria

Time to close out this game on defense. Bring it home boys.

  • Aaron Candelaria

Great pass rush by Aldon on the three man rush to negate any hail mary attempt. Great week one victory for the reigning NFC champs!

  • Robert Carter

Hey Sam… there is that power rush without Justin. Aldon just broke through a double like it was nothing.

    • Samuel Charles

that would’ve been a 59 yard field goal to win it there if you act like those 4 pts weren’t on the board...

but games don’t work like that…

      49ers win

      Raiders lose

      twas ever thus

      god i hate kaepernick =(

      • Robert Carter

Well Bridgewater might be the best option for that one

    • Samuel Charles

we’ll see, clowney hasn’t looked like any Aldon Smith to me so far this year…

what about Jared Goff in the supplemental =)

  • Maggie Pilloton

    GO NINERS

    • Samuel Charles

i mentioned the 49ers only had 40 yards rushing early in the 4th qtr, they finished with 90 yards…

      they ran when it mattered..

      • Samuel Charles

Eric Reid and Boldin with amazing debuts…
