It’s opening Sunday, the Oakland Raiders are undefeated, our writers are commenting live on our Golden Gate Sports game thread on the action in Indy — and we’re encouraging fans to come talk about Raider football with us all year long while it’s in progress.

Thoughts on the game, players, opinions? Sound off below!!!

The Indianapolis Colts were a Wild Card team in 2012 and are led by a prototype quarterback out of Stanford by the name of Andrew Luck. The Raiders are predicted to struggle in 2013, but the entertainment value is bound to be plentiful.

Terrelle Pryor means unpredictability and excitement at quarterback, Darren McFadden will try once more to stay healthy and fulfill his promise.

Youth on defense finds sack-seeking Sio Moore, a man who isn’t the type to ask for an invitation before introducing himself to QB’s – while the miraculous story of D.J. Hayden continues when he lines up at corner in the NFL for the first time.

Post any comments and reaction here as we kickoff the NFL season!

  • Samuel Charles

    So…..

How long till Terrelle Pryor’s inducted into the Hall of Fame?

    • Samuel Charles

      Why wait — right?

  • Samuel Charles

I’m really excited for D.J. Hayden, that really is one of the greatest stories in NFL history, and how great would it be if he turns into a lockdown corner…

  • Danny Saeed

Not feeling so good about this. Hope we compete.

    • Samuel Charles

Me too, hoping for some young stars to be born.

  • Samuel Charles

Keyshawn Johnson just named Pryor as a breakout performer, not sure that’s a good thing…

  • Danny Saeed

Keyshawn’s smart,I can see Pryor having a big game. People are sleeping on him

    • Samuel Charles

Let’s just hope he takes three steps forward with his two steps back, he’ll be good & bad I think…

  • Samuel Charles

Vegas has the Raiders as an 11 point dog in their opening game, I’m putting 50 cents on the Raiders.

    #countonTP2

  • Samuel Charles

Eight ESPN experts just made their Super Bowl picks, the only one to pick the 49ers in the SB was Berman, who is a 49er fan…

    • Samuel Charles

for the record, none of them picked the Raiders either

  • Samuel Charles

I really wish Menelik Watson was starting,

Raiders and Pryor will get the ball first

  • Samuel Charles

Gorgeous first read by Pryor on the first play!!

  • Danny Saeed

    Pryor to Streater!

    • Samuel Charles

      UNBELIEVABLE!!

  • Samuel Charles

    Early timeout on 3rd & 3..

Raiders moving the ball on the opening possession behind Pryor..

  • Danny Saeed

    I’m liking it so far…

  • Samuel Charles

Rich Gannon doing the color commentary, it’ll be interesting to hear his comments TP..

he’s not exactly known for holding his opinion back on the Raiders

  • Danny Saeed

McFadden hasn’t had any holes.. OL needs to open up the run game for him. Gotta get him going.

    • Samuel Charles

can Pryor loosen up the D with his arm & legs????

  • Samuel Charles

    PRYOR’S ON FIRE

  • Danny Saeed

    Bad throw

    • Samuel Charles

He was late, but I really thought the receiver has to help him get an incompletion there…

  • Danny Saeed

    Bad choice

  • Samuel Charles

I’d like to see a replay, but Raider receivers are going to have to win jump balls for them to have any chance, I didn’t think it was a horrible throw…

    need more replays

    • Samuel Charles

and i still think it was a promising first drive

  • Robert Carter

That was an awful throw. It was a fluttering duck..

    • Samuel Charles

i want to see another replay, but i really think the receiver should get an incompletion there

  • Samuel Charles

DJ Hayden’s first tackle as a pro was DHB!!

  • Danny Saeed

I agree but there were two defenders there… ball shouldn’t of been thrown

    • Samuel Charles

I thought there was just one defender, he was def late but Raider receivers man to man on jump balls in the end zone this season is going to be about as good a scoring chances as they’ll get to score this season??

(then again, I’m drinking the Pryor-ade)

      • Samuel Charles

i think we’ll see the safety coming late

  • Samuel Charles

Andrew Luck treating the Raider defense like SJSU right now..

  • Samuel Charles

    Season + Raiders = Longgggg

  • Robert Carter

That was a beautiful throw by Luck.

  • Danny Saeed

Yeah not hard to throw it when you have all day in the pocket. No rush + Porter is getting schooled by Wayne.

  • Samuel Charles

Pryor’s going to look even worse by comparison to “the prototype out of Stanford”, not sure TP will ever throw people open like that…

you’re right Danny — rushing the passer isn’t illegal, right?

  • Danny Saeed

    Hahah. Absolutely not.

  • Samuel Charles

be nice if they could run the ball a little bit

  • Danny Saeed

No holes for Dmac. He’s not running very aggressively but no holes..

    • Samuel Charles

      definitely…

this O line doesn’t look like they can run block, or pass black — i bet they do damage at the buffet though!!!!!

  • Samuel Charles

Rich Gannon — forever the voice of optimism on the Raiders

    Streater getting involved early…

  • Danny Saeed

    Streater’s a stud…

  • Samuel Charles

that’s a good play by TP — DMac has to get that first down there….

  • Danny Saeed

DMAC CAN’T BREAK A TACKLE ONE ON ONE IN THE OPEN FIELD? Im pissed

    • Samuel Charles

it’s early, you’ve got all year to get pissed =)

  • Samuel Charles

yeah, shouldn’t the Defense be worried if he’s going to the end zone there, not for three yards…

this is huge year for Dmac

  • Samuel Charles

going for it on 4th and 2

  • Samuel Charles

i don’t mind that there, i hate it when they burn timeouts — but losing 5 yards at midfield doesn’t matter — especially with Marquette

  • Danny Saeed

    GET PORTER OFF WAYNE omg

  • Samuel Charles

Lamarr Houston is playing a lot of right defensive end right now…

  • Samuel Charles

    Sio Moore on the field

Wayne and Luck are playing catch in Indy

  • Aaron Candelaria

Finally get a good pass rush and Luck still hangs in the pocket and gets a TD…

  • Danny Saeed

    Porter sucks

  • Samuel Charles

    Lonnnngggg season for Raider fans…

  • Samuel Charles

Okay GGS writers — any reasons for optimism in Oakland 20 mins into the season????

  • Danny Saeed

    Pryor looks solid.

  • Aaron Candelaria

Its about time McFadden found some running room.

  • Robert Carter

They need to take some down field shots. The Colts do not respect the passing game and just stuffing the box.

  • Danny Saeed

    PRYORRRR

  • Danny Saeed

    I agree Rob..

  • Danny Saeed

    This guy’s a stud! C’mon…

  • Robert Carter

Pryor is going to be the only player with a shot at being a consistent running threat. I would like to see more screens or swing passes to get the ball into the hands of McFadden in space.

  • Samuel Charles

    PRYOR stiff arming Bethea !!!!

  • Danny Saeed

Yeah I agree, McFadden looks timid but there aren’t any holes for him.

  • Samuel Charles

definitely Robert, they need to get more creative how Dmac gets the ball…

perhaps preparing all summer for the Flynn offense wasn’t helpful when Pryor’s your QB on opening day

  • Aaron Candelaria

There’s a nice power run by McFadden!

  • Samuel Charles

NOW THAT”S HOW YOU HIT THE HOLE

  • Danny Saeed

Looking more confident. C’mon Pryor took Oak 85 for the score

  • Samuel Charles

Don’t look now, but this is still a football game halfway through the 2nd qtr…

TP may turn the ball over this year, but he can move the team

  • Danny Saeed

    Exactly Sam… Couldn’t agree more.

  • Samuel Charles

time for the Raider defense to make plays (or even one play???)

  • Samuel Charles

look at that, Colts punt, Raider ball…

  • Danny Saeed

    AMAZING lol

  • Samuel Charles

like how Dmac hit that hole on 2nd and 3 — nowhere to run but he got 2 yards..

    3rd and 1

gonna need that all year long

  • Danny Saeed

    He’s a strong one..

  • Danny Saeed

    LAMARR

  • Samuel Charles

    Lamarr!!!!!

  • Samuel Charles

    big 3rd down here

  • Danny Saeed

Two back to back forced punts. WOW.

  • Samuel Charles

“The NFL’s worst team” — is putting up a fight

    • Robert Carter

I wouldn’t say worst. I would say the Jets and Jags have something to say about that.

      • Samuel Charles

they look like an NFL team to me so far, and that’s a great start..

  • Samuel Charles

Pryor shined in two-minute drills during preseason

  • Robert Carter

Those are the throws that hold Pryor back as a passer. He just struggles to put the ball in a spot to throw his receiver open or in stride.

    • Samuel Charles

i agree, but i think we need to compare pryor to true freshmen in college that need help from all their receivers — not polished passers like Luck…

but if he can’t learn to make those throws he’ll never be great

  • Robert Carter

    Flashes of old the Jano

  • Aaron Candelaria

That’s a heartbreaker of a miss, SeaBass never misses those. Would have been nice to get those points on the board going into the half.

    • Robert Carter

Did the holder play a part in that?

      • Samuel Charles

i missed that, what happened on the hold Robert — was it Marquette?

        • Robert Carter

I think it was a clean hold, but the announcers were talking about how King never held before, even in college. So, they were thinking it might have been a pull due to a lack of confidence in the holder.

  • Tej Kamaraju

hey guys. glad to join the party 14-7 at half time

  • Samuel Charles

    brutal…

Pryor’s imperfect, so is the offense, that was a great job on 3rd and long to set Jano up for an easy FG..

    tough end..

    • Robert Carter

It is a positive that he is moving the offense and aside from that one bad throw into the end zone, he is keeping the ball safe.

  • Danny Saeed

    I’m HEATED about that miss.

    • Samuel Charles

what’s the point of a billion dollar 300 lb polish howitzer if he misses that chance…

he was thrown off because he wasn’t kicking on dirt???

  • Samuel Charles

Colts get the ball to start the second half, I thought Pryor and Lamarr Houston looked good early…

seemed like Streater disappeared after a great start??

  • Samuel Charles

i missed that on the FG miss, what happened on the hold Robert — was it Marquette?

  • Danny Saeed

Marquette held. Jano missed 48 yarder

  • Danny Saeed

Almost never missed inside the 50

    • Samuel Charles

yeah, that’s supposed to be a layup for Jano

  • Samuel Charles

that was one reason they might keep Kluwe over King — he’s a better holder..

    here’s Robert Carter from below

“I think it was a clean hold, but the announcers were talking about how King never held before, even in college. So, they were thinking it might have been a pull due to a lack of confidence in the holder.”

  • Samuel Charles

    So….

How does everyone feel overall about the first half? (compared to your expectations?)

I’m really pleased their moving the ball, but I feel like this defense will look this soft all year…

what about our other GGS writers??

first impressions on the 2013 Oakland Raiders…

  • Danny Saeed

I like Pryor a lot, wish we had Veldheer and Watson on the offensive line. Defense looked soft at first but picked it up towards the end of the half.

    • Samuel Charles

yeah, the D was definitely better late… that’s a good point, it’d be nice to see what they’d be doing with Watson and Veldheer at bookends in Indy…

  • Danny Saeed

    Pressure’s getting there

  • Aaron Candelaria

Wow, guys need to wrap up….

  • Samuel Charles

Is it just me or is this the most Lamarr Houston has played at right DE in his whole career??

  • Samuel Charles

Raider pass rush making themselves heard…

  • Samuel Charles

tracy porter can’t cover, but that was a nice blitz

  • Danny Saeed

Raiders defense is alive! Tarver wasn’t kidding about the DB blitzing..

  • Robert Carter

    Can’t waste timeouts like that.

  • Danny Saeed

    Nooooo… confusion

  • Danny Saeed

    Ran out of time too

  • Samuel Charles

i really have zero problem with that timeout, in an ideal world you don’t call it..

but it’s 3rd & 1, this game could hang in the balance on this play.. get it right.

colts could get it back and go up two scores..

  • Samuel Charles

feeling a lot better about that TO now !!!1

  • Robert Carter

That play action bootleg was a great call…

  • Robert Carter

Pryor is nasty with that stiff arm

  • Danny Saeed

    SUCH A NASTY STIFF

  • Aaron Candelaria

Pryor already has a franchise record for rushing yards in game (at 91 so far). THe previous record holder? Rich Gannon!

  • Samuel Charles

look at that effort from Pryor!!!!

    who wants matt flynn?

  • Samuel Charles

    wow, i probably would’ve gone for it…

    TP = Never Boring

  • Samuel Charles

Raiders STUFF the Colts on 3rd & 1

  • Samuel Charles

    4th down, here we go

  • Samuel Charles

    SACK, RAIDER FOOTBALL!!!!!

  • Danny Saeed

    JASON HUNTER!

    • Samuel Charles

great wrap up there, Luck’s a way better athlete than he looks, we saw it earlier

  • Samuel Charles

I think that’s four sacks already by the Raider D…

only 21 more to tie last year’s total

  • Aaron Candelaria

Ummm on second look that might not be a TD… McFadden with the bobble and his foot stepped out… Nice pitch and catch too.

  • Danny Saeed

    Was he out?

    • Robert Carter

Looks like the toes on his second foot were on the white line

  • Samuel Charles

yeah Aaron, pretty sure that’s coming back..

    but TP is on FIRE!!!

that ball’s not perfect, but that’s an easy touchdown

receivers have to help him out..

    • Robert Carter

I would say that was a great ball… you want to put that on the pylon, but McFadden needs to help him with a clean catch.

      • Samuel Charles

i think so too — gannon’s nitpicking that there’s too much air underneath it..

if it’s on you, catch it…

  • Samuel Charles

So they know it’s 3rd and 10 coming out of the long break between quarters…

Do they try and keep it in field goal range, or risk throwing for the first down????

  • Samuel Charles

We have a Denarius Moore sighting in the Fourth QTR for FIRST DOWN

  • Robert Carter

I don’t know how many times I have mentioned in my articles, but Streater is becoming the go-to guy.

  • Samuel Charles

does anybody remember the good old days when Dmac could beat people in the open field???

  • Samuel Charles

Robert — i do believe that was one of those “WOW” plays from Pryor you were talking about!!!!

    • Robert Carter

Yep… he has a better chance at creating huge gains over Flynn

  • Samuel Charles

    D. Moore that’s a TD???

  • Robert Carter

    That was a solid throw

  • Danny Saeed

    TD RAIDER!

  • Samuel Charles

That penalty’s a real killer for dual-threat QB’s near the goal line..

    and TOUCHDOWN RAIDERS!!!

    TP for President!!!!!

  • Samuel Charles

As somewhere up above (or down below where it’s warm)

Al Davis is rubbing his hands and smiling as Terrelle Pryor makes him look good !!!!

    • Robert Carter

Also, still trying to sue the NFL

      • Samuel Charles

        but of course!

  • Samuel Charles

beatiful read by Nick Roach sniffing out the screen for a 5 yard loss

  • Danny Saeed

Impressive run D compared to last year’s

  • Samuel Charles

too much time there, but Raider D as a unit looks so much better right now..

  • Samuel Charles

I agree with what Gannon just said about C. Woodson..

he’s smart at safety, but he does most of his best work now near the line of scrimmage..

gotta get him up in the box and be creative with chuck

  • Robert Carter

The Run D looks much improved over last year, but the Colts are not a strong running team to begin with.

  • Samuel Charles

is it just me or did the Raiders just get the benefit of the doubt on a no call???

    • Robert Carter

      Eh… it was incidental contact

      • Samuel Charles

i thought it stated in the rulebook

“when in doubt, throw flag on Raiders”

  • Danny Saeed

    CWood almost had that

  • Samuel Charles

tough timeout on defense by Raiders there, but again, this is a critical play..

    3rd and 2 for colts

Raiders ahead halfway thru 4th qtr in Indy…

wonder how Matt Flynn is feeling about Pryor’s performance??

  • Samuel Charles

    ..

  • Robert Carter

And then Andrew Luck makes the Raiders look like the Cal Bears

  • Aaron Candelaria

I guess Luck didn’t want to be shown up by Pryor, showing he can do it with his legs too.

  • Samuel Charles

Woodson wants holding on DJ there…

he’s pointing as the play goes

  • Samuel Charles

5 minutes left in the Fourth quarter, Raiders down 21-17

Pryor gets the ball with a chance to lead his team down the field…

overall this game looks like a huge positive to me so far..

    What do other people think?

    • Aaron Candelaria

Big moment for Pryor. We’ll see how he can handle the offense late.

  • Robert Carter

Being competitive against a playoff team? I say that is a positive.

  • Robert Carter

Jump Pass? Please Pryor, do not let that think you can do that again

  • Samuel Charles

they’re so afraid of his legs TP’s arm doesn’t have to be perfect!!

  • Samuel Charles

this penalty is Kasa’s fault or the sideline…

    terrible

    not pryor’s fault at all

  • Danny Saeed

    Wow.. crazy here

  • Samuel Charles

that wasn’t the case on this play, but running QB’s can create weird angles for the O Line on blocking (and extra holding)

i think the O Line has played very well, not much running room for Dmac, but good overall

  • Aaron Candelaria

That was a CLUTCH 4th down conversion by the offense.

  • Samuel Charles

    Yeah,

4th and 9 for a chance to win the opening game..

and Al Davis’ final draft pick ever has it all on his shoulders…

    TP2 = Great Drama

  • Samuel Charles

such a pretty throw and catch

  • Aaron Candelaria

Well, Pryor almost put the team on his back, but that long sack made it too difficult.

  • Cameron Bothwell

Colts got lucky, inexperience killed the Raiders

    • Samuel Charles

definitely, the Colts are the better team, but they didn’t really outplay the Raiders today…

  • Samuel Charles

    Tough end, the sack hurt…

he has to force these final throws..

just two shots to get it in from the 23 yard line…

fantastic game by Pryor and most of the team…

  • Robert Carter

You take the good with the bad from Pryor. He had more good than bad, just a key turnover here and there which took points off of the board.

    • Samuel Charles

i’d say much more good than bad..

and i thought taking the sack was worse than either of the (perhaps defensible) picks…

Pryor’s a hot pick up in fantasy this week — at the least..

      thanks for commenting Robert!

  • Samuel Charles

Lots to build on, may have raised Pryor’s expectations too high if they win there..

Raider D line got some sacks, O line wasn’t bad, promising stuff. (Sio Moore?)

But a really exciting game overall…

I have to run soon, thanks to everyone for commenting on this exciting game.

remember Golden Gate Sports will have live chats during Raider and 49er games all year long with our writers & readers..

please feel free to keep chatting as we wrap the game…

    • Samuel Charles

      Thanks to everybody for participating!!!!!!!
