Earlier today during their press conference the San Francisco 49ers’ defensive coordinator Vic Fangio announced that Nnamdi Asomugha is slated to be the team’s third cornerback for their game this Sunday against the Green Bay Packers.
This comes after he has been wearing a non-contact jersey recently during practice due to a collarbone injury. During the press conference Vic Fangio even went so far as to say “We’re confident that he’ll be able to play on Sunday.”
Asomugha will face a tough task ahead of him in his first game as a member of the San Francisco 49ers. He beat out Tramaine Brock who was listed evenly with Nnamdi earlier this week when the team’s website released an unofficial depth chart. Now it seems he has made the leap as the clear cut guy.
He most likely be matching up against Green Bay’s third receiver Jordy Nelson for a majority of the game so it will be a good early test to see if the former Raider-turned-Eagle still has the skill set needed to cover good receivers.
It will also be interesting to see how he fairs at the nickel corner position, something which he has not really done much of his whole career.
