De La Salle 34, Clayton Valley Charter 14
In De La Salle’s first game in over 30 games without Bob Ladouceur as their head coach, the Spartans defeated Clayton Valley Charter, 34-14.
John Velasco ran for 187 yards and three touchdowns in the victory.
“I worked harder tonight than I think I ever have,” Ladouceur told the Contra Costa Times. “I was trying to keep an eye on our defense a bit, and I was looking at our safeties at times, and trying to see what was happening with our running backs at times.”
Ladouceur had been the head coach of the Spartans since 1978, and once reeled off an impressive 151 straight victories from 1992-2000, as well as 20 unbeaten seasons. During that win streak, they outscored opponents by 38 points and even won a game 75-0 against Clayton Valley-Concord.
Elected to the National High School Hall of Fame in 2001, Ladouceur owns the state record for all-time wins, and is 13th nationally. What’s even more impressive is that when he took over the program in 1979 at age 25, he had no coaching experience, and De La Salle had not recorded a winning season since 1965.
