To add insult to a disappointing year, Matt Cain has been sent to the DL. He is being placed on the 15-day DL after suffering a contusion on his right forearm, according to the Giants’ twitter account.
The injury happened yesterday against the Pittsburgh Pirates during the fourth inning. Cain was immediately pulled after being hit on the line drive by Gaby Sanchez and went straight to the team’ locker room. This is the first time he’s been placed on the DL in his career.
The Giants’ ace has struggled this season and is just 8-8 with a 4.43 ERA throughout this season.
In related news, the Giants have also annouced they have purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Yusmeiro Petit from AAA Fresno and was added to their 25-man roster.
The 6′ 1″, 28-year-old Venezuelan has tallied a 5-6 record in 15 starts and has posted a 4.52 ERA in 87.2 innings with the Fresno Grizzlies. More recently, Petit has looked good in his last two starts for the Grizzlies having allowed just one earned run and posting 14 strikeouts, although he did not get the win in either game.
