In a shocking development, the San Francisco 49ers have traded wide receiver A.J. Jenkins to the Kansas City Chiefs for wide receiver Jon Baldwin, the Chiefs announced.
Jenkins, the 49ers first round pick in 2012, has been a disappointment. Last season, he played sparingly and did not record a single catch, and this preseason, he has not been very impressive.
Obviously, the 49ers have run out of patience with their young wide receiver, who they hoped would make a giant leap this season to replace the injured Michael Crabtree. Jenkins was listed as the No. 2 wide receiver on the depth chart heading into the preseason, but in two games thus far, he has not shown that he is capable of starting in the NFL.
“Hopefully, I’ve made some strides,” Jenkins said after the first preseason game. “We have three more games left. It’s a long year. No need to panic and get all discouraged. Just got to keep watching film.”
The 49ers acquired Baldwin, who is also an underachieving draft pick. Selected in the first round in 2011 by the Chiefs, Baldwin racked up just 20 receptions for 325 yards last season. He has 41 catches for 579 yards and two touchdowns in 26 games over two seasons.
