After workout with the team, veteran free agents Austin Collie and Lavelle Hawkins will sign with the San Francisco 49ers. This was Collie’s second workout with the team within a few weeks’ span.
No doubt the plethora of injuries to the San Francisco receiving corps had plenty to do with these signing.
How thin is the position right now? Well, Kyle Williams, Kasim Osgood, and A.J. Jenkins have all missed multiple practices due to minor injuries. Also, do not forget about Mario Manningham, who is recovering from his knee injury and Michael Crabtree who is a long-shot to play this season due to his achilles. Both Manningham and Crabtree on on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.
As we wrote yesterday Collie continues to recover from a torn patella tendon that kept him out of the Indianapolis Colts’ lineup for almost the whole season. However, he must have shown the coaching staff something positive for not only beating out the other receivers, but showing he would be an asset for the team.
From 2009-2011 Collie averaged just over 57 catches per season while racking up 612 yards receiving on average as well. He also had 16 total touchdowns in that span, although in 2011 he only caught one.
For Hawkins, this will be just his second NFL team after playing the first five years with the Tennessee Titans. He was drafted by them in the fourth round, and is a bay area kid who played for Cal and hails from Stockton, CA. His best season came in 2o11 when he had 47 catches for 470 yards and a touchdown. Other than that, his career has been underwhelming.
