For those that believe in the “Super Bowl curse,” the San Francisco 49ers are primed to be the victims of it next season.
No team that has lost the Super Bowl has won the championship the following year since the 1972 Miami Dolphins. In fact, no teams has even made it back to the league championship since the Buffalo Bills in 1993.
So history has proven that Super Bowl losers don’t do well the next season. But don’t tell that to 49ers safety Donte Whitner.
“We feel like we’re not only the team to beat in this conference, but the whole, entire NFL,” Whitner told CBSSports. “We have to go out, prove it and continue to work, but that’s just the way we feel.”
It’s not even August yet, and we already have a player calling their team the best in the league.
“This is our third year together — offense, defense, special teams,” Whitner continued. “We’re still working on the small details, but everybody has knowledge of all three phases. We feel like we have top-notch players — top players in the NFL — and the icing on the cake is the coaching staff.”
The 49ers may well be the best team in the NFL, as Bovada has them at 6/1 odds to win it all, tied with the Broncos for the best in the league.
But really, if you’re truly the best team, go out there and show it on the football field, not with your mouth.
