Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Percy Harvin announced Tuesday evening that he will be undergoing hip surgery that will keep the explosive offseason acquisition off the filed until at least November or December.

Last year the San Francisco 49ers won the NFC West by going 11-4-1. The Niners split two games with the Seahawks who finished 11-5.

With one hawk eye on the fiercest new rivalry in the NFL, the Seahawks paid a handsome price for Harvin, giving the Minnesota Vikings their 2013 first-round and seventh-round picks, as well as their 2014 third-round pick just for the privilege of paying the game-breaking wide receiver and kick returner $67 million over six years with $25 million guaranteed.

The Seahawks thought Harvin would take them over the top. And now the 25-year-old all-purpose star known for his speed and athleticism announced that he needs major hip surgery, which will cost him most of the season.

The 49ers won’t have Colin Kaepernick’s favorite receiver for most of the 2013 season, due to Michael Crabtree’s Achilles injury, but San Francisco had already added Anquan Boldin, and Seattle’s own promising young quarterback, Russell Wilson, was working with fewer weapons even before the loss of Harvin.

The Seahawks coughed up three draft picks so they could pay a boatload of money for an undersized receiver whose hips are integral to his single most outstanding attribute — elusiveness, and even before playing a single NFC West game, Harvin’s injury may have tilted the balance of power towards the reigning champions in San Francisco.

There’s no sugar coating it, this is very bad news for Seahawk fans.
