Sacramento Kings to Meet with DeMarcus Cousins About Lucrative Contract Extension

If the Sacramento Kings truly view DeMarcus Cousins as a franchise player, they will need to negotiate a pretty lucrative contract extension with the big man.

Cousins is entering the final season of a four-year, $15.8 million deal, but is eligible for an extension this summer.

According to Jason Jones of the Sacramento Bee, Cousins’ agent, Dan Fegan, will meet with the Kings in the near future. The contract could be worth $80 million over five years — $16 million per year.

The Kings’ new ownership and management is very high on Cousins, viewing him as the cornerstone of the franchise.

“He’s an unbelievable talent,” said newly-hired GM Pete D’Alessandro. “I can’t speak more highly about him as a player. I will be getting in touch with him, for sure. He’s unbelievable. He’s a very important part of what we’re looking to do.”

Cousins averaged 20.1 points and 11.7 rebounds per game in 75 games last season, and is one of the best centers in the game.

Unfortunately, he has a bad reputation for his quick temper and immaturity.

From arguing with referees to elbowing players to disrespecting head coaches, Cousins has pretty much done everything that is humanly possible to ruin his image.

But there is no denying that he is extremely talented, and if everything clicks, could become a dominant force in the NBA, which is why the Kings need to do all they can to keep him and help him mature.

“It’s something I already knew but I’m glad it’s being said,” Cousins said when asked about being the face of the Kings. “So I’m going to take my opportunity and I’m going to do my (darn) best to lead this team to win.”
