Kent Bazemore is dazzling everyone in the summer league. This is an unusual sight because Bazemore is usually the one dancing with the towel on the Golden State Warriors‘ bench.
During the regular season, fans craved Bazemore and would scream and shout whenever he had the basketball in the final seconds of a contest. We all thought he had the glorious game winner in Game 2 of the Spurs-Warriors series, but Manu Ginobli expunged that with a last-second 3-pointer.
Now, in summer league, Bazemore is trying to prove to Mark Jackson that he knows how to play the game. It may be just the summer league, but in his last three games, Bazemore has scored 25, 26, and 13 points. The last game was a bit off, but he was able to do his part defensively and still make some smart plays. Again, it’s just summer league, but his long wingspan could possibly give him crucial minutes in the NBA instead of garbage time.
The Warriors are on a 13-game winning streak in summer league action, and Bazemore has been a huge part of that. Last year, when the Warriors signed Bazemore, many thought he would be useless. In some ways, he was. The potential that we’re seeing in him, however, would suggest that he could possibly play a bigger factor down the road.
Next year, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson are going to be running the team from the wing — this is for sure. Toney Douglas will come off the bench for Curry, but no official backup for Thompson has been confirmed. Bazemore has a shot at that, but so does rookie Nemanja Nedovic, who has been called the European Derrick Rose. He may be quick, he doesn’t have the point guard skills or defending skills that Bazemore has.
