When Jeremy Affeldt left Saturday night’s with a left groin strain, it didn’t look good. He reportedly heard a pop while delivering a pitch, and he instantly limped around the mound before being taken out. A trip the DL seemed inevitable and that’s exactly where Affeldt is headed, plus more.
Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reported Sunday morning that Affeldt will miss four-to-six weeks.
Affeldt’s out 4-6 weeks, Bochy said. Mijares role will increase. #sfgiants.

Affeldt has reportedly been pitching through pain in his groin for two weeks, but he was pitching through it until Saturday when the pain evidently increased to levels he could no longer handle.
Affeldt spoke to reporters, including Alex Pavlovic of the San Jose Mercury News, and he had this to say:
Sometimes being a tough guy doesn’t always work out so well, Affeldt said, who added that he may have cost the Giants some games not being able to pitch at full effectiveness.
The latter part of Affeldt’s quote may indeed be the reason for his 5.93 ERA since June 7. During that stretch, Affeldt’s command was noticeably erratic and he was leaving pitches up in the strike zone.
Affeldt’s injury most likely means that Jean Machi, who was recalled Sunday morning, will be with the Giants until September. As Schulman notes, Mijares’ role will increase, which isn’t a bad thing, as he has given up just one run since allowing two to the Padres on June 17, equating to a 1.04 ERA.
