The San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks have one of the greatest rivalries in the NFL at the moment, with both teams putting forth terrific products on the football field.
But off the field, that rivalry is carrying over to the fanbase as well.
What started off as some comments on Reddit has become a national story during a time where there’s almost no news concerning football at all.
Apparently, Seahawks fans are attempting to purchase a commemorative brick at the 49ers new stadium and place a pro-Seahawks, anti-49ers remark on it.
Per the San Jose Mercury News:
Dozens of Seahawks fans contributed more than $1,000 online to inscribe “Go Hawks” or other anti-49ers messages outside the team’s shiny new palace in Santa Clara after the bricks went on sale last week. On Reddit, users suggested buying bricks with phrases such as “Congrats on the second best stadium in the NFC West,” “Ravens 34, 49ers 31″ (the score of this year’s Super Bowl) or sly phrases in which the first letter of each word spells out “G-O-H-A-W-K-S.”
However, their efforts may all be for naught. The company operating the brick program for the 49ers has the final say on all messages put on the bricks, and in a statement, they said, “All brick messages will be reviewed to make sure they are appropriate for the (Stadium Authority), the community, the tenants and the stadium patrons.”
It is safe to say that any such message planned by Seahawks fans will be turned down by the 49ers.
Construction on Levi’s Stadium is expected to be completed in time for the 2014 season, and it will host Super Bowl L in 2016.
