Brandon Moss provided the runs and Dan Straily mowed down batters as the Oakland Athletics defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1 on Tuesday night.
It was instant offense off the bat of Moss in the fourth inning. With two down and nobody on, John Jaso hit an opposite field double, setting it up for Moss to blast a changeup from Gerrit Cole over the right field scoreboard and into the seats.
That would be all the runs that Straily and the rest of the pitching staff needed.
In 6.1 innings pitched, Straily allowed just a Pedro Alvarez home run in the second inning. He gave up only one other hit, a single to Starlin Marte in the third. After that point, the Pirates were held hitless for the next five innings.
Straily departed in the seventh inning with the tying run on second base and one out. Sean Doolittle entered, and shut the door, striking out Gaby Sanchez and inducing Jody Mercer into a foulout.
Ryan Cook pitched a perfect eighth, and Grant Balfour extended his consecutive saves record with his 42nd straight save, working around a leadoff single.
The A’s are now tied for the most wins in all of baseball with 54, and lead the AL West by half a game over the Texas Rangers.
