Milone Takes the Mound Against Royals In Kansas City: Game Preview

The Oakland Athletics enter Friday night’s game against the Kansas City Royals having won six of their last eight, and Tommy Milone will take the mound looking for a solid start after seeing his ERA balloon to 4.17 over the month of June.

The A’s swept the Royals in a three-game series in Oakland back in May, with all three wins coming by a single run. That sparked a 18-5 run by the A’s over their next 23 games, and they’ve accumulated a 50-36 record — the best start to a season for the franchise since 1992.

The Royals have won four of their last six and are looking stay competitive in the AL Central, where they currently hold the third place spot in the standings. Right-hander Wade Davis will be trying to rebound from a rough game against the Minnesota Twins in which he gave up six earned runs on five hits and tied his career-high with five walks. He left the game in the top of the second, and it was a far cry from his previous four starts, during which he never allowed more than two earned runs and averaged 5.25 strikeouts.

Oakland’s offense cooled off a bit in their most recent series against the Chicago Cubs as they scored only two runs over the final two games. Their team batting average of .248 is fifth-worst in the AL, and their collective split of .267/.367/.411 with runners in scoring position is a bit telling in regards to their offensive woes. Still, they lead all of baseball in walks with 326, and they’re still a half game ahead of the Texas Rangers in a tight race for first in the West.

Milone will go for his second win in a row after not getting a victory in his previous four starts. He wasn’t exactly on point in his last game as he gave up two homers in the opening frame and another in the third against St. Louis, but Oakland’s hitters matched the Cardinals’ effort and gave him seven runs of support in the win.

Game time tonight is 5:10 PST.
