The Dwight Howard saga is heating up, and will come to a conclusion in the coming weeks.
Until then, however, speculation is going to be plentiful about where the free agent center will sign.
Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reports that five teams will meet with Howard in Los Angeles between Sunday and Tuesday, with each team getting a chance to convince the star to sign with them.
Those five teams are the Houston Rockets, Atlanta Hawks, Dallas Mavericks, Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers.
According to Wojnarowski, the Rockets are the current frontrunners to nab Howard, with the Lakers in second. Earlier reports suggested that Howard is not inclined to re-sign with the Lakers, who have gone on a desperate ad campaign to convince him to stay.
The Mavericks and Hawks may be the wild cards in this frenzy. Dallas will offer to pair Howard up with Dirk Nowitzki, while Atlanta will offer Howard the chance to play in his hometown.
As for the Warriors, they have perhaps the toughest road to acquiring Howard. Because they have little salary cap space, they would have to orchestrate a sign-and-trade deal with the Lakers.
Wojnarowski reports that the Warriors have ”shown little inclination” to trade away its core players to obtain Howard, and that Howard’s camp invited the Warriors to visit with the free agent, which is more of a “sign of respect” than anything else.
However, they will make their pitch, sending their big trio of owner Joe Lacob, GM Bob Myers, and head coach Mark Jackson down to Los Angeles in the coming days to meet with Howard. We’ll see what comes of it.
For now, let’s have some fun with some wild speculation.
