Oakland Raiders punter Chris Kluwe is one of the most controversial figures in the NFL for what he does off the field, and that held true on Thursday, when he appeared on Conan.

Kluwe, as we all know, is a staunch supporter of equal rights, and cracked a little joke about Aaron Hernandez when Conan asked him about the NFL’s view on his outspokeness.

“They pretty much just left me alone,” he said. “As long as you’re not out shooting people.”

Hernandez, of course, was arrested earlier this week and charged for the murder of semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd, and is being investigated for a double homicide that took place last year.

Kluwe was just signed by the Raiders this offseason, but has already been appearing all over the place.

Earlier this month, he declined an invitation to visit the White House because of minicamp, and last week, he tweeted about his apparent wild car ride to Las Vegas.

He also has a book coming out called Beautifully Unique Sparkleponies, which based on the title alone, should be a more than fascinating read.

Kluwe averaged 45.0 yards on 72 punts last season with the Vikings, and is competing with Marquete King for the starting position to replace Shane Lechler
