Former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez has been charged with murder.
Hernandez was arrested outside his New England home on Wednesday morning in the homicide investigation of Odin Lloyd, who was found dead in a park near Hernandez’s mansion on June 17.
Police had searched his home multiple times last week, and surveillance tapes showed Hernandez and Lloyd driving into the park where Lloyd’s body was found.
In addition to murder, Hernandez was also charged with five counts of gun-related charges. He plead not guilty.
Following his arrest, the Patriots decided to release Hernandez.
“Words cannot express the disappointment we feel knowing that one of our players was arrested as a result of this investigation. We realize that law enforcement investigations into this matter are ongoing,” the team said in a statement. “We support their efforts and respect the process. At this time, we believe this transaction is simply the right thing to do.”
“The involvement of an NFL player in a case of this nature is deeply troubling. The Patriots have released Aaron Hernandez, who will have his day in court,” the statement continued. “At the same time, we should not forget the young man who was the victim in this case and take this opportunity to extend our deepest sympathy to Odin Lloyd’s family and friends.”
