“If you can play, you can play.”
That message has been echoed a multitude of times in recent memory, especially in the wake of Jason Collins coming out as the first openly gay athlete in a major American sport.
Earlier this week, seven prominent Bay Area athletes from the region’s professional teams took part in a video for the You Can Play Project.
They are, in order of appearance in the video below: Barry Zito (San Francisco Giants), Coco Crisp (Oakland Athletics), Klay Thompson (Golden State Warriors), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes), Marcel Reece (Oakland Raiders), Joe Thornton (San Jose Sharks), Vernon Davis (San Francisco 49ers),
“Gay, straight, bi — whatever.” reads part of the script, “We don’t care. You can play on our team.”
And that’s the way it should be for every team.
