Madison Bumgarner has the best ERA in Giants rotation, but that doesn’t mean he’s dominated.
Bumgarner dazzled in April, but his 3.58 overall ERA isn’t much to drool over. The Giants won Bumgarner’s last start, but they are 1-4 in his last five. Bumgarner pitched into the sixth and coughed up three runs against the Arizona Diamondbacks in his most recent start, but the Giants won the game.
The Giants are in need of another win today, as they are 2.5 games behind the first-place D-backs in the NL West. Matt Cain carved up the Pittsburgh Pirates yesterday, and the Giants salvaged one win in Pittsburgh, but the Giants are just 3-3 on this road trip. The Giants have scored 37 runs on the road trip (the opponent has scored 28), but the Giants have only managed three runs.
To add onto their impressive run total, the Giants will have to score off of Kris Medlen. The Giants pounded Medlen on Sunday, May 12 in a 5-0 win, but Medlen has been phenomenal this season. While his 3-6 record would suggest otherwise, his 2.87 ERA proves his dominance.
However, Medlen has a career 4.67 ERA against the Giants, and the Giants are looking to increase that mark. Pablo Sandoval and Marco Scutaro helped the Giants score five runs off of Medlen, as both hit home runs in the game, but neither will play today. Tony Abreu is starting at second base, and Joaquin Arias will play third.
Can the Giants win their fourth consecutive game against the Braves? Can Bumgarner bounce back and give the Giants a much-needed win? Find out when first pitch is thrown at 4:30 PM PST, and stay tuned for complete postgame coverage.
