The short, but difficult Merion Golf Club course showed its teeth today as birdies became increasingly scarce due to the thick rough, narrow fairways, and sloping greens.
Crowd favorite Phil Mickelson shared the second round lead with relative unknown Billy Horschel at 1-under par, the only players to finish in the red. Number one world-ranked Tiger Woods was within striking distance on moving day, four shots back at 3-over par.
Mickelson negotiated the course with a 2-over par 72, garnering his only birdie of the day on the last hole. Horschel shot an outstanding 67, thanks to hitting every green in regulation.
A group of five golfers are at even-par. Steve Stricker, Luke Donald, and Justin finished their rounds at level-par, while Ian Poulter is at even-par through 14 holes, and amateur sensation Cheng-Tsung Pan is even after nine holes. Play again was postponed due to darkness.
The projected cut is 8-over par, and play resumes at 7:15 am Saturday.
