San Francisco 49ers: Construction Worker Killed at Site of New Stadium in Santa Clara

Donald White, a 63-year-old elevator mechanic working at the site of the San Francisco 49ers new stadium in Santa Clara, was killed on Tuesday in a tragic accident.

According to a report from the San Jose Mercury News, the mechanic was “standing on a ladder at the bottom of an elevator shaft when he was hit from above by an elevator counter weight.”

“The 49ers organization was deeply saddened to learn this morning of the news at the construction site,” said the 49ers in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, and co-workers affected by this tragedy. The 49ers family has lost a teammate today.”

On a typical day, more than 1000 workers are at the stadium site.

This is first fatality to occur at the site since construction began more than a year ago.

The stadium, soon to be named “Levi’s Stadium,” is scheduled to open in time for the 2014 season, and will host Super Bowl L in 2016.

The city of Santa Clara also released a statement on the accident:

The city of Santa Clara was deeply saddened to learn the results of a tragic incident that occurred early this morning. We wish to express our sincerest sympathies to the family and relatives of the worker who lost his life.
