A’s Return Home To Take On Surging Yankees: Game Preview

After taking two of three from the New York Yankees in the Bronx last month, the Oakland Athletics will face off against the AL East power tonight at O.Co Coliseum, with CC Sabathia taking the hill against Bartolo Colon.

The Yankees have won six of their last seven, while the A’s are returning to their home stadium where they’ve won their last eight contests.

Colon has played a large part in that success, winning his last four starts to give him a 7-2 record on the year with a 3.14 ERA. He’s only given up six walks in 77.1 innings, and tonight he’ll get a chance to shut down one of the most vaunted offensive lineups in the Majors when he goes up against the likes of Robinson Cano, Mark Teixeira, Kevin Youkilis and Ichiro Suzuki.

Sabathia’s start hasn’t been quite as eye-popping from a statistical standpoint, but the left-hander has come on as of late. In his last appearance, the Vallejo, California native pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts and only one earned run in a win over the Cleveland Indians. He’s now 6-4 this year in 13 games with a 3.74 ERA and 80 strikeouts.

Oakland will throw plenty of right-handed bats at him tonight as A’s right-handed hitters have a line of .262/.360/.436 against southpaws. Leading the way will be Josh Donaldson in the cleanup spot. The third basemen is garnering serious All-Star consideration after an impressive start where he’s hitting .324 with nine homers and 42 RBI’s. And that’s without even factoring in the spectacular defense he’s been displaying on a nightly basis.

Monday was the first off-day the A’s had in 17 days, so hopefully they’ll come out with a little extra spring in their step. Game time is 7:05 PST.
