A's, Griffin Try To Finish Series Strong Against Chicago: Game Preview

The Chicago White Sox finally broke through against the Oakland Athletics this season, getting a win Saturday night after a three-run eighth inning to earn a 4-1 victory. Now they’ll face off for the final time, with A.J. Griffin getting the call against 25 year-old left-hander Hector Santiago, who’s stepping in for the injured Jake Peavy.

Santiago has five starts this year, with a 1-2 record and a 2.96 ERA.

Griffin will be trying to bounce back after taking a tough no-decision last week against the Brewers. The right-hander threw seven strong innings and allowed only four hits with no runs, but the bullpen faltered and the A’s went on to lose the game 4-3. Still, Griffin is sporting a 3.67 ERA and is putting together an impressive follow-up season to his rookie campaign where he came in to bolster a starting rotation that was couldn’t afford any fall-off in production.

This year there’s been a little bit more offense to sustain the success, however. The A’s are in the top five in the American League in runs, doubles and on-base percentage while leading the league in walks. They’ve hit five home runs this series and 10 altogether on the seven-game road trip. All of this has them sitting at 38-26, the best record in the AL.

The bullpen has been a concern, however, which is not usually the case for Oakland. Sean Doolittle has given up 10 runs in his last five appearances, but manager Bob Melvin isn’t overly concerned and just points to it as a rough patch that the pitcher will have to work through.

Game time today is at 11:10 PST.
