Lincecum Looks To Build On His Last Start, As Giants Face Rockies: Game Preview

For Tim Lincecum, every start is an event. Saturday will be no different as the two-time Cy Young award winner looks to build on his best start of the season.

Last Sunday against the Atlanta Braves, Lincecum tossed seven shutout innings for the first time since July 14, 2012 against the Houston Astros. He struck out seven and allowed just two hits against a powerful Braves offense.

Lincecum struggled against the Rockies on April 9, but his offense bailed him out of a loss. He allowed six earned runs in six innings, but settled in nicely after allowing five runs in the second inning.

In 24 career starts against the Rockies, Lincecum is 11-7 with a 3.76 ERA. Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki both own two home runs apiece off Lincecum, who has a lifetime ERA of 4.11 at Coors Field.

Colorado will send Tyler Chatwood, who was called up Saturday, to the mound. In five starts at Colorado Springs this year, he went 2-1 with a 3.14 ERA. He spun a complete game shutout on May 7. In 2012, he appeared in 19 games (12 starts), and pitched to a 5-6 record and 5.43 ERA.

At the major league level, Chatwood has made two starts this year–one against the Atlanta Braves on April 24, and one against the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 29. He held the Dodgers scoreless over six innings of work during his first win of the season.

Saturday will mark Chatwood’s fifth career game and fourth career start against the Giants. In those five outings, he’s 1-2 with a 2.93 ERA. He actually picked up his only major league save against the Giants.

  • The Rockies have won just three of their past 15 games against the Giants at Coors Field
  • The Giants optioned Brett Pill and recalled Jean Machi following Friday night’s loss.
  • The Giants have made nine errors in their last 33 defensive innings (four games). Their 30 overall errors for the season is third-most in the National League.
  • Giants starting pitchers have posted a 10.13 ERA in 18.2 innings on their current road trip. For the season, their 4.69 ERA is the third-worst in the NL.
