Oakland Raiders: Terrelle Pryor Had No Idea Who Matt McGloin Was

Imagine being the starting quarterback of a prestigious program such as Ohio State, and preparing to face another renowned team in Penn State on the road.

You would at least know who the opposing quarterback was, right?

Back in 2010, Terrelle Pryor had no idea who Nittany Lions quarterback Matt McGloin was.

“Never heard of him,” Pryor said at the time. “Heard a lot about [Rob] Bolden, though.” (Bolden was another quarterback at Penn State but wound up transferring to LSU).

Ironically, with the Oakland Raiders signing McGloin to a three-year deal on Wednesday, those two are now teammates and will compete with each other on the depth chart.

McGloin completed 270 passes for 3,271 yards, 24 touchdowns and five interceptions during his senior year, and was at the helm during the Jerry Sandusky scandal that resulted in Joe Paterno’s firing.

Meanwhile, Pryor warmed the bench for much of last season before getting a start in the final game, somewhat displaying his potential.

Neither Pryor nor McGloin may wind up starting for the Silver and Black — Matt Flynn and Tyler Wilson are the other two candidates — but it can be guaranteed that they will at least learn each other’s names.

Probable ice-breaker:

McGloin: Hi Terrelle, I’m Matt.

Pryor: Oh, great. Another quarterback? Where did you go to college?

[Awkward silence]

DA really loves non atlhletic players that remind him of himself.

Yea, he’s better off choosing the fastest, most athletic players available. That’s been working out great for us.

Why can’t we simply have an honest, open, real competition between these four (4) players for the starting qb position. As a life long Raider fan I get the feeling that despite the preseason performances, Matt Flynn will start simply because he’s making more money. That cannot be allowed to happen and if it does Dennis Allen loses all respect w/ me. This team needs a leader, fighter, and smart captain to help show the way toward a aggressively close team.

It appears thus far that no one player has anything on the others. Matt McGloin should not be treated any better or worse than the other three and if plays the best should start immediately. Period…

Unrelated, even if Terrelle Pryor gets best out for the QB position I’d have him on the field and playing TE, WR, QB on occasion and use him all around in every capacity possible including Special Teams. Pryor is one of the best athletes on the team and he would play despite the egos of others. I would even consider him on Defense should the opportunity present itself.

Lastly, because we are starting over as a new franchise I’d like to see one of my all time favorite players traded away (Sebastian Janokowski) for whatever the market will bring and we could use future draft picks to stock pile.

If the Oakland Raiders win four (4) games this year it will be a minor miracle. That is not a criticism, but the future of the organization and team should be the next five (5) years. We need to return to being feared, despised, and having the physical toughness other teams dreaded. I pray that McKenzie doesn’t cave into others and drafts complete football players and not the popular names the media mentions. We are still very thin at cornerback, nose tackle, tight end positions and could use another first round pick on a running back as Darren McFadden is NOT the answer to any type of stability at the position
