2013 NFL Draft: 49ers Trade Up, Select Safety TE Vance McDonald with 55th Pick

The San Francisco 49ers traded up from 61st to 55th overall with the Packers to select tight end Vance McDonald out of Rice.

McDonald recorded 36 catches for 458 yards and two touchdowns last season.

“Used all over the formation but mainly as a slot receiver,” says the scouting reporting from NFL.com. “Smooth athlete, comfortable in space for someone his size. Engages with good hand placement when blocking, uses body to shield off running lane.”

In the trade, the 49ers sent their 61st and 173rd overall selections to move up six spots.

Someone his size, 6’4″ / 268. Thats about 20 pounds more than what other TE’s weigh. Ranked #6 among the TE’s in this years draft. Many fans are wondering why they didn’t take Zack Ertz. What is it about Pete Carroll and Jim Harbaugh? The players they claimed to have loved when they recruited them in college are now shunned by them in the pro’s.

I’m giving Baalke a C+ so far in rounds 1-3. He wasted 3 draft choices by trading up to get Reid, McDonald, and Lemonier, each one of these players he chose would have fallen to him at his original draft positions.
