Parker Takes The Mound As A's Kick Off 4-Game Series Against Orioles: Game Preview

The Oakland Athletics begin a seven-game homestand tonight after losing five of six on their east coast road trip, with Jarrod Parker looking for his first win of the season against Jason Hammel and the Baltimore Orioles.

The organizations were two of the best stories in all of baseball last season, with both teams falling in the divisional round of the playoffs after successful regular seasons that exceeded expectations from most of the baseball establishment. Through the first four weeks of the season, the A’s and Orioles are showing that it wasn’t a fluke, as both are currently in second place in their respective divisions.

There were some encouraging signs on offense in the previous series against the Boston Red Sox after the A’s could only muster five runs in their three games against the Tampa Bay Rays, and Thursday night they’ll have to contend with the team that’s directly below them in the standings in runs scored. Although they lost two of three in New England, the A’s contended in both losses and nearly staged a comeback Thursday behind two home runs from outfielder Chris Young. They now lead the American League in runs, RBI, OPS, walks and stolen bases.

The Orioles are coming off of a successful stint in Baltimore, going 6-3 against the Rays, Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays. Hammel will look to build upon a solid opening month, going six innings in each of his four starts while compiling a 4.74 ERA with 14 strikeouts.

For Oakland, Parker will try to pick up where he left off in Tampa Bay, as he went 6.1 innings against the Rays last Saturday and gave up only one run on six hits. While the A’s lost the game, it was a good sign for the right-hander, as he hadn’t gotten through the fourth inning in his previous two starts and has struggled in general to start off the 2013 season.

Game time is 7:05 PDT.
