Bay Area Buzz 4/22: Sharks Fail to Clinch, A's Swept in Florida

Sharks Fail to Clinch on Late Columbus Goal

All the Sharks needed was another 97 seconds of scoreless hockey, and their playoff ticket was officially booked.

Instead, Joe Pavelski failed to control a pass from Justin Braun in the defensive zone, and Ryan Johansen fired in a wrist shot late in the third period to keep the Sharks from earning that precious little ‘x’ next to their name that would signify the organization’s ninth straight playoff berth.

A’s Swept in Florida, Head to Boston

Oakland’s shiny road record absorbed a ding against Tampa Bay, which swept the A’s in three games.

Now, after an 8-1 loss to the Rays on Sunday that knocked the A’s out of first place in the AL West, Oakland heads to Boston, where the Red Sox and the entire city are getting over a tragic and emotional week that included the Boston Marathon bombings, the shooting death of an MIT security officer and a citywide manhunt that resulted in the death of one bombing suspect and the apprehension of the other.

49ers’ Kaepernick Puts Defenses on Edge

Naturally, Kaepernick wants to stay a step – perhaps even two – ahead of the defenses.

His seven weeks of training outside Atlanta this offseason included two weeks on the track with sprinters Monica Hargrove and Avard Moncur and long jumper Dwight Phillips. The goal: teach the rising 49ers star the proper technique and mechanics and make a quarterback who in 2012 averaged a gaudy 6.6 yards a carry and ran for five touchdowns in the regular season even more dangerous in 2013.
