Sergio Romo blew his first save of the year on Friday, as the Giants fell to the Cubs despite mustering a three-run rally in the ninth inning to tie the score and eventually take the lead.
Saturday’s game calls for another chilly day with winds favoring the pitchers. Although, Jeff Samardzija and Madison Bumgarner don’t need any advantages, as their both thriving thus far.
Samardzija has a 2.63 ERA in 13.2 innings (two starts), and has struck out 22 batters in those 13.2 innings, rendering him a nifty 14.5 strikeout per nine innings rate. The Braves touched him for four runs in his last outing, but he struck out a career-high 13 batters in only 5.2 innings. In his season debut, he shutout the Pirates over eight innings.
Samardzija’s experience against the Giants is fairly limited. He made only one start against them last year, surrendering two runs in five innings, and he has also made two relief appearances. But that’s it.
Bumgarner, meanwhile, is 2-0 with a 1.32 ERA in 13.2 innings. He needed 104 pitches to get through 5.2 innings in his last outing against the Rockies, but yielded only two runs despite issuing five walks. He pitched eight scorelesss innings in his season debut against the Dodgers.
Bumgarner has a shade of more experience against his counterpart than Samardzija. In six lifetime outings against the Cubs, he’s 3-2 with a 2.79 ERA. More recently, he went 1-1 in 2012 with a 4.50 ERA.
- Alfonso Soriano is hitting .462 with one home run in 13 lifetime at-bats against Bumgarner.
- Angel Pagan will not play today with a sore right that he suffered making a diving catch on Thursday. He’s day to day. Gregor Blanco will hit leadoff, and Andres Torres will take his spot in the lineup.
