It’s a risky decision to trade within your own division…unless the other team is the Astros.
The A’s have shipped pitcher Travis Blackley to the Houston Astros for minor league outfielder Jake Goebbert, the team announced Thursday.
Blackley was designated for assignment earlier this week. He pitched very well as a fill-in starter and long reliever in 2012, going 6-4 with a 3.86 ERA. However, his struggles this spring (14.21 ERA) made him the odd-man out of the pitching staff.
Ironically, the A’s will fly to Houston to face the Astros in a three-game series starting Friday, and Blackley is expected to be in uniform tomorrow against his former team.
Goebbert split last season between Double A and Triple A in the Astros farm system. He hit over .300 in 114 games in Double A, but struggled in 30 games with Triple A Oklahoma, batting .133.
