It’s the first day of April, and that can only mean one thing: Opening Day for the Giants and A’s! I know you were thinking April Fools’ Day, but we don’t like to deceive our readers (right?).
Anyways, here are some stories to start off your Monday morning:
The 2013 Oakland Athletics are the inhabitants of a different type of streak. A streak of a dubious nature has plagued the team for multiple seasons now. Dating back to 2005, the A’s have lost the last 8 consecutive opening days. Yes fans, since the belovedArthur Rhodes closed out a 5-4 victory over the Texas Rangers on April 5th, 2004, the A’s have not had a taste of season opening glory since Friendster was the dominant social network on the web.

The absence of splashy additions might have left some wondering if the Giants could have done more to gird for their latest title defense — particularly while around the N.L. West, the Dodgers took on baseball’s highest payroll and the Diamondbacks, if more quietly, made a flurry of offseason moves.

Put yourself in McKenzie’s shoes. You can pay a quarterback you’re not sold on, Palmer, $13 million this year, another year the cap is so tight it’s squeezing every position group on the roster. Or you can pay Matt Flynn $5.25 million in salary, not knowing if he’s going to be your quarterback of the future but knowing he’s got a better chance than anyone on your current roster.

It was as if the San Jose Sharks winger was already traded, already gone and forgotten. A cold statistical season in which Clowe has yet to score in 28 games and his coming off a recent shoulder injury, hasn’t stopped the hot pursuit of the pending unrestricted free agent.
