Former 49ers placekicker David Akers will visit with the Lions next week, reports the Detroit Free Press. The Lions are looking for a replacement for Jason Hanson.
Akers was released by the 49ers earlier this offseason.
After an unbelievable 2011-2012 season when he set an NFL record with 44 made field goals, Akers was simply not been the same kicker last season, making just 69 percent of his kicks.
In January, it was revealed that he had undergone double sports hernia surgery in the previous offseason, which could have affected him.
“I feel when I miss kicks I let the team, organization, and the fans down,” he lamented at the time. “I take it personal.”
Akers shares the record for the longest field goal in NFL history, a 63-yarder that he kicked in Week 1 last season. Little did we know that it would be one of his only bright moments of the year.
