The San Jose Archbishop Mitty Monarchs (28 – 6) battle southern California powerhouse Santa Ana Mater Dei Monarchs (33 – 2) for the Open Division CIF state basketball championship. Mitty has won the two most recent Div. II CIF state championships, while Mater Dei has won the last two consecutive CIF Div. I championships, which makes tonight’s encounter one of the most anticipated showdowns in California high school basketball history.
Mitty is led by consensus All-American Aaron Gordon, one of the most celebrated California high school basketball players ever. The 6’8″ senior scores at will, despite being double- and triple-teamed, is a prolific rebounder, and supreme shot-blocker.
Gordon will have a worthy opponent in Mater Dei’s Stanley Johnson, a 6’7″ junior rebounding terror and shot blocker. The game adds an extra competitive dimension as both basketball sensations were teammates on the Oakland Soldiers fabled AAU team which won the prestigious Nike Peach Jam last summer.
The winner gets bragging rights for what should be one of the most scintillating championship games in state history, as well as the crown for the best high school team in California.
Tip off at the Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento, CA is 8 pm Pacific time.
